This came my way a fair while ago now, with a brief to make one good one out of 2 if possible. It might be possible...

1 and 3/4 of a Hoover Senior

ila_rendered

One with decent original paint, one already re-painted

ila_rendered

We have a 652a from 1970

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

And a 6525c from 1972

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

I started with the complete one

Bag off

Not too ancient paper bag fitted

ila_rendered

Bag holder is in good order

ila_rendered

The bag bolt was removed

ila_rendered

Don't think this has been cleaned recently!

ila_rendered

Took the flange off the bellows

ila_rendered

And noticed the nice original fluted flex fitted

ila_rendered

As we remove the handle bolt

ila_rendered

Luckily we don't need to care about these handles as Stuart had the good set powdercoated I think, so these are just so I can use it

We need these bits though

ila_rendered

Bottom handle retaining plate and bolt

ila_rendered

This handle has seen some use

ila_rendered

Under the handle are 2 screws that hold the little plate on

ila_rendered

Which has been smashed about before

ila_rendered

Then a cord clamp

ila_rendered

Which pulled out of the handle bail casting then could be removed from the cord

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Can get into tearing this down now!

Baseplate off first

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

The belt was a genuine old Hoover one

ila_rendered

Time to get the Agitator stripped! One end cap came off

ila_rendered

And I could tap the axle through

ila_rendered

And strip each end down

ila_rendered

These were scrap

ila_rendered

Brush strips slide out now

ila_rendered

Brushroll done, it's time to get back to the machine

The tool entry port was in good condition, with it's original paint

ila_rendered

Rear wheels now. Circlip off on one side

ila_rendered

And one wheel washer and clip comes off

ila_rendered

Then the circlip that sits behind the wheel can come off

ila_rendered

Other wheel was oddly far far dirtier...

ila_rendered

Wiring now!

ila_rendered

Cover plate off

ila_rendered

Which was hiding some grot

ila_rendered

2nd switch cover now

ila_rendered

They are a pretty switch

ila_rendered

Under the switch box looks like it's been underwater once

ila_rendered

Power switch now

ila_rendered

Heavily used

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

We can take the hood off now

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

And begin to get properly dirty...

Hood retaining brackets off

ila_rendered

Then I found the headlight bulb and laughed

ila_rendered

Worked well, can't fault it that!

ila_rendered

Time to get the handle bail off, starting with the first circlip

ila_rendered

The height adjuster bar falls off now

ila_rendered

Then the height adjuster pedal slides off

ila_rendered

This is a holder for the flex as it comes down

ila_rendered

Moving to the other side, the recline pedal comes off with one screw

ila_rendered

With that off, and all circlips removed, the whole bail bar taps out of the handle bail, finally releasing the bag flange lock and spring

ila_rendered

And the handle bail is also free

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

We start by removing the wiring block cover

ila_rendered

and finally get rid of the mains cable, which has been looked at before

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

The flex itself can be pulled out of the external protector

ila_rendered

First 2 wires off are for the switch

ila_rendered

Then the resistor for the headlight wires

A wire clamp needs loosening

ila_rendered

And all of this can be withdrawn

ila_rendered

An screw here

ila_rendered

removes the wiring connector

ila_rendered

Then, the motor can be unscrewed from the chassis. Nice original clean paint came to light!

ila_rendered

Sort this out in a second

ila_rendered

After the front wheels

ila_rendered

Which were Genuine Hoover compared to the rear wheels which were replacements.

The final 2 fingers for the painted chassis was they had painted the bumper too!

ila_rendered

and painted it whilst the motor was fitted...

ila_rendered

One carbon and link wire removed

ila_rendered

More wires and carbons removed

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Time to remove the top bearing

ila_rendered

Not too filthy

ila_rendered

Cooling fan off

ila_rendered

And we can remove the screws that allow the motor cover to be removed

Coil is unbolted

ila_rendered

Then the fan is held and the armature is untwisted from the belt spindle

ila_rendered

Fan was full of grub

ila_rendered

All the fan spacers removed

ila_rendered

And I chipped off the rock hard motor seal

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

And finally I had the nice looking plug off for washing

ila_rendered

That's one of them stripped (the 6525c) and ready for washing

ila_rendered

And using the bag we removed as a bin for all the rubbish this generates

Time to strip the 652c down

ila_rendered

Baseplate was filthier

ila_rendered

Belt was way more perished and not a Hoover belt like the other machine

ila_rendered

Brushroll was awful

ila_rendered

End caps far rustier

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Pretty much 0 paint left on this one!

ila_rendered

The plastic bushings some of these had hanging on in there

ila_rendered

Brush strips were way more worn than the other ones too!

Also note plastic brushroll end caps, a sure sign of prior work

ila_rendered

Tool port cage was far worse paint wise

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Switch was just as dirty

ila_rendered

Nice front wheels

ila_rendered

Stripped underneath

ila_rendered

Copy/paste with the motor stripdown, although this did have an original Hoover flex fitted before it was chopped off in the distant past

ila_rendered

Out

ila_rendered

Motor was a fair bit dirtier

Caked on crap splattered around the cooling fan

ila_rendered

And under the fan

ila_rendered

Both fans!

ila_rendered

Tore the rest of it apart

ila_rendered

And had to chip the lower bearing out to uncover it

ila_rendered

But, despite all this, the hood was in pretty good condition

ila_rendered

Under the filth

ila_rendered

Both motors went back together from a big pile

ila_rendered

Spins with a small breeze now!

Agitator shells got cleaned up

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

And primered then sanded

ila_rendered

Both motors are done

ila_rendered

And everything else was washed, polished, run over the wire wheel and became ready to go back together again

ila_rendered

Built both brushrolls up with new bearings

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

And cleaned up end caps
