S5211 - Replacement Motor - Blown Controller - My Fault!
« on: November 13, 2020, 08:37:51 pm »
Hi there,

Looking for the benefit of your collective experience please!

My much treasured S5211 blew its motor (742/84-42/2) and I looked for a replacement without success......

From here, I take the much coveted "Dick of the Day" award, so bear with me please.......

I decided to take a punt on another Miele motor, identical externally, but a different reference number (720-42/2). Cos they're all the same aren't they???? Of course they're not!

I wasn't bothered if it wasn't rated to the full 2200W, it just needed to work.....

What I didn't bother to check was the pin out of the connector on the motors..... In my rush to see if it worked, I plugged it in and turned it on. The motor briefly started and then a bang and flash from the controller board and.... silence.....

The only damage I can find is a blown surface mount component on the back of the board. That's a shame, because if it was one of the larger discrete components, I would have been confident of repairing it.

My limited knowledge of single phase motors has them having three wires. One forming a "starting" circuit with a capacitor, and the other being the "running" circuit.

Why does the existing motor have 4 spade connections? Any ideas?

What's annoying is that had I bothered to examine the connectors and rejig the harness plug, it would probably have worked..... I think.......

So, my plan, if the right motor doesn't become available at the right price, is to get a new controller.... re-jig the harness plug.... and try again.....

What do you think??

Take the mick if you like.... It is Friday the 13th!

Miele motors are a minefield and we avoid them for these types of reasons. A 'spares or repair' machine on eBay may be the only way to get a reasonably priced spares.

Ryevac will be able to repair that board if you cant get one. The circuit question is also one for him, I'll link him to the topic.
