Panasonic MC-E42N - Stripdown & Refurb
« on: November 28, 2020, 11:49:47 pm »
Howdy.

I did this a year or so ago now, for another collector. With some tenuous distant link to his childhood, we have the Panasonic MC-E42N.

Which was growing something

ila_rendered

Electronic Speed Control

ila_rendered

Brushing and Barring Brushroller

It was a decent little thing. But, it hides a dark secret, which we don't know about yet!

Cable unwound

ila_rendered

The filthy vintage MK plug has no place here

ila_rendered

Handle comes off with one screw

ila_rendered

Then onto the bag door

The post motor filter slots off

ila_rendered

Revealing filth

ila_rendered

Bag door latch unscrews

ila_rendered

The TOP QUALITY paper bag gets slung far away

And we can remove these 3 screws

ila_rendered

Which makes the hose fall off

ila_rendered

The hose unscrews and strips down nicely  from the ends

ila_rendered

mmmmm

ila_rendered

Onto the wiring now, and the 2 screws holding the front cover on can be removed

The wiring cover came off really easily

ila_rendered

But sadly bought something else with it

ila_rendered

It's part of the body

ila_rendered

The whole thing was covered in some sort of greasy crap, which was/had rotted the plastics!

Removing the speed control knob involves just squeezing these tabs

ila_rendered

and discovering this...

ila_rendered

Removed them anyway

ila_rendered

And we can take a look in here

ila_rendered

The bag piston indicator stuff lifts out, note the greasy crap

ila_rendered

which was literally everywhere

Whole thing didn't move at all!

ila_rendered

Mains cable can be removed now

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Then things lifted out of the way to get to the back of the switch

So we can push the switch out without the housing around it turning to powder...

ila_rendered

Everything is sort of attached together when unplugged though...

ila_rendered

So we need to move downhill, removing the rear wire cover as we go

ila_rendered

And turn to the base plate

ila_rendered

Which was flipping broken

I removed the glider bars

ila_rendered

Then the air duct

ila_rendered

And the pivot peg that holds the hood to the chassis. Sporting a pack-out bodge as these wear...

ila_rendered

Recline lock pedal now, one screw on the end of the bar

ila_rendered

And it lifts out

ila_rendered

Next are these two screws which are the hood pivot on the other side

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Then the hood comes off the back chassis

ila_rendered

Let's take the motor cover off now and see what joy lurks within!

One surprisingly unperished post air diffuser

ila_rendered

And the wires we need to seperate

ila_rendered

Snip

ila_rendered

Now the loom can be pulled up and out, removing all the electronics

ila_rendered

This was loose, so I removed it, cleaned it up and re-pasted it!

ila_rendered

More rock hard yet greasy bag housing seals

ila_rendered

And more damage...

ila_rendered

The pre-motor filter looks lethargic

ila_rendered

But hiding under the fancy rear compartment cover are some tools!

The tool door cover falls off if you open it too vigorously so that was easy

ila_rendered

Revealing the lovely Panasonic tools

ila_rendered

These 2 brackets unscrew now

ila_rendered

Rear wheels now, nice and simple

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

This looks normal...

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

This looks like a date code but I'm not clever enough to decipher it

ila_rendered

Then we can de-rubber the motor

ila_rendered

Back to the hood now

ila_rendered

Belt doesn't look fab

ila_rendered

On these brushrolls, you need a screwdriver

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

And splits down alot

ila_rendered

Furniture guards off, these were the worst and got a whole sub_cleaning of their own!

ila_rendered

With lots more broken plastic

ila_rendered

All the grease was under here

ila_rendered

Cracked

ila_rendered

Not looking good...

So... Everything was washed. And, I discovered that the remaining pieces glued together quite well... So with a lot of qbond, I fixed it...

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

And got it all structural enough to be able to get here!

ila_rendered

We can fit the now spotless furniture sliver

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

We can gather the pile of brushroll

ila_rendered

Fit the belt guard into the hood

ila_rendered

Throw the brushroll together, with nice fresh grease in the bearings

It can sit in here for now

ila_rendered

The diffuser got hot glued back into place

ila_rendered

And the motor was re-fitted, loom re-run and connected and sealed back up forever more

ila_rendered

I wired the top end up as it stops the bits flopping about

ila_rendered

Here is said new paste, the finest* stuff I had

ila_rendered

Connect it all up

ila_rendered

Then stuff it neatly back in

ila_rendered

The bag door seal just about slid on to this! Wasn't quite as straight as it once was

ila_rendered

But fitted onto the vac fine

Back down to the bottom, the hood can be re-fitted to the body

ila_rendered

And the bung on the other side

ila_rendered

Recline lock can be re-assembled and re-fitted

ila_rendered

Brushroll connects up to motor now with a nice new belt

ila_rendered

Air duct back in

ila_rendered

Then the glued up baseplate goes on (after you've fitted the carpet gliders.... oops)

ila_rendered

This all needs hiding

The tools and cover go back on

The hose wasn't fully dry at this stage so I screwed the body bit in as the hose fits easily enough with it on

ila_rendered

Washed filter

ila_rendered

A latch

ila_rendered

And it's saved!

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

And when filming the after video

Realised that their actually not bad, certainly alot better than the newer ones, which took all the grooming and contact with the floor away!
