Why do brushbars differ on clutched models?
« on: September 23, 2011, 03:54:25 pm »
Hi, was wondering why on the DC04, DC07 and DC14 the brushbars are different on the clutched and origin models as I've heard the origin brushbar does a better job on thicker carpet.. Anyone know?  :D

Hi, Lucandhar,
I'm no expert so this advice would  have to be verified. But on a machine without clutch the drive belt would come from the motor shaft in a straight line to the brush bar pulley. Whilst on a clutched model the first belt goes in a straight line from the motor spindle to the clutch drive pulley whilst the second belt goes from the driven pulley of the clutch to the brush bar, thus the two belts are offset. Therefore, the pulley on the brush bar would have to be in a different position further along to accommodate this offset.
Cheers, SonyD20.

R J Pennington nailed it.

The location of the belt differs between clutched and non clutched models so one will not work with the other as the belt would not line up correctly. Also, the non clutched brush roll is cylindrical and the clutched one is a twisted design.

Why is one cylindrical and the other twisted? I have found origin machines work much better on thicker carpet & do not get as much hair/threads wrapped around them

Well, Origin machines were designed for carpets only and clutched machines to be all floors.

Exactly why that may be is an interesting question, and one worth putting to the R&D at Dyson.
