Dyson DC31 max button problem

One of my family members has a Dyson dc31 animal (no stick just the mini motorised head, although the dc35 wand and head does fit and work) but it's max button (but its labelled as 65aw) is jammed on, I have attempted to remove it's back panel and I got the torx 8 screw out and I manged to get the bottom clip off (but I ended up snapping a Stanley knife blade, because it was the only thing that was thin enough) but I couldn't get the top bit off, and I didn't want to break it so I put it back together. Is this a common problem? Is there a spring that could be in the wrong place? Could someone tell me how to get the back panel off?
