Dyson DC35 - Stripdown & Refurbishment How-To Guide
« on: April 21, 2021, 07:47:01 pm »
This is a Dyson DC35 I got given a while ago

ila_rendered

It was very complete, if not utterly filthy (long been chucked in the garage etc)

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Odd sticker on the battery, must have seen work at some point

ila_rendered

First off is to split into two

ila_rendered

Then remove the filter

ila_rendered

There is no real way to disassemble these early handheld units and if you do manage too you cant really replace anything so it all got a good wipe down and that's it for the motor housing and wand and battery really

ila_rendered

Everything else can be washed though so the bin can be removed

ila_rendered

The non return valve was fully stuck

The bottom flap and the flap seals can be split apart

ila_rendered

Then the bottom cone pops off the cyclone assembly

ila_rendered

Which will be filthy

ila_rendered

Levering gently up and releasing 3 tabs separates the shroud from the cyclone assembly

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Then undoing all of the screws there are (and the one in the rear) the cyclone splits apart and you can retrieve the gasket

ila_rendered

Floorhead now

ila_rendered

Which is one of these

ila_rendered

Remove the brushroll and end cap. The bristles do come off the roller with the screws you can see but the white plastic holders snap and it's all a bit pointless so I leave these whole

Unscrew the 2 front corner screws and the front bumper can be removed

ila_rendered

2 very rusty wheel axles prised out and the front wheels may turn again...

ila_rendered

With some more screws removed the motor housing part comes apart

ila_rendered

More grotty wheels and the sealing strip for hard floors come off too

ila_rendered

The clear part unclips from the pivot points at either side

ila_rendered

Then the motor can be unplugged from the main part of the brushroll. This does not break down any more, but washes whole nicely without the motor fitted

ila_rendered

The motor drive chain breaks apart via these two screws

ila_rendered

The extension shaft will just need a dust down and fresh oil applied, the brushroll drive cog can unscrew and be carefully removed to dig all the hair out of the bearing that sits underneath.

Once all cleaned, washed, polished etc it can be laid out

ila_rendered

And re-assembled, starting by rubbering up the bin flap once more

Then fitting said bin flap to the bin

ila_rendered

Fit the foam gasket to the mid frame then sit that inside the outer shell

ila_rendered

Then fit and secure the cyclone assembly

ila_rendered

Clip the shroud and lower cone on

ila_rendered

then fit the bin to the cyclone

ila_rendered

Can't quite pop this together yet as the filter isnt dry

ila_rendered

So onwards to the floorhead

ila_rendered

A nice fresh bit of grease on the mating faces helps here I find

The motor can be refitted into the chassis now

ila_rendered

Then the cover plate, wheels and strip fitted to that

ila_rendered

Snap the clear portion inbetween the ends

ila_rendered

Bumper and brushroll on

ila_rendered

I had a spare brushroll from a scrapped one of these heads at this point

ila_rendered

And this is what is under those screws...

ila_rendered

Very fragile, very hard to clean, not too sure why you would...

In another coincidence I had it's lesser brother the DC34 which did not have a wand or floor head in for a refurb! (no thread as ITS IDENTICAL, but with less stuff!)

ila_rendered

Looks alot better now

ila_rendered

ila_rendered

Works alot better than before too!
