Dyson UP24 Ball Animal 2: How to remove the end cap?
« on: May 04, 2021, 02:39:15 pm »
I have one of these in with the brushroll making a hideous screeching noise when spinning. With the brushroll removed, the motor is OK, The problem appears to be a massive build up of hair around the shaft under where the end cap fits on. But I cannot seem to remove the end cap in order to clear it out properly, despite applying quite a lot of pressure.
Is this built as a single unit, or can I lever the end cap off?
To add insult to injury, it appears that you cannot even buy the brushroll/end cap assembly separately: you have to replace the entire cleaner head at £65. Part no. is 968642-02.
Has anyone encountered this same problems and got any suggestions please?

The brushroll is 968644-01.

Q lists the end cap as 965665-03 but that's a V6 one so I think that's a mistake.

If the end cap won't come off it must be melted on.

Thanks: definitely a mistake: the V6 end cap is slotted to allow removal with a coin, the UP24 one isn't. Beko did a review of the UP24 in which he says that the brushroll appears to be one pieced with the end cap?
Is the UP24 brushroll listed as a separate component by any chance?
The same cleaner head appears to be used in the UP22.

I'm not surprised it's wrongly listed with Q, because Dyson's own site is wrong!

I think that the standard head that comes with the Ball 2 Animal is what is known as the 'Epicyclic Head', and the end cap is definitely not the slotted one as shown.
Anyway, all's well that ends well: I spent a merry hour picking out a ton of hair from between the end cap and the brushroll end with a DC04 button removal tool, and now it's stopped screeching and jamming. However, it can only be a matter of time before it builds up again, as there is no proper seal between the 2 parts. Yet another flawed design I fear.

Beko did a review of the UP24 in which he says that the brushroll appears to be one piece with the end cap?

Now you say it, yes.

We don't see that many of those yet.

Based on what I've seen with this one,  you will be before long. But the plot thickens: I googled the brushroll part number and all the pics come up showing it without the end cap. So it does seem to be detachable, I just wasn't brave enough to risk prying it off and breaking it: not at £35 a shot for a new one.
They are cleanable using my method, it's just very tedious. It seems that every job on a ball model takes at least twice as long as on a conventional machine.

Saw one of these today, the end cap and brushroll comes out together, but the end cap just pulls off.
