Being Made Redundant Now What ???
« on: September 06, 2021, 01:39:50 pm »
Well after 27 years of fixing Tv sets and Vacuum cleaners I have been made redundant,
Both Tv and Vac repairs aren't as frequent as they were so for me its curtains.
What I'm thinking is going it alone purely fixing Vacuums.
Has anyone else done that after being in proper workshop ?
I'm looking at Pros and cons what I don't want is people knocking on my door day and night as I would have to work from home.
So any of you fellow Vacuum repairers doing this and can throw some ideas at me.

And please don't say fix TV's the repair market is virtually non existent and that is the reason for losing my job
Its all Led failures stripping down screens horrible and very expensive.

Cheers Chris.

There's plenty of work fixing Dysons if there isn't too much competition in your area.

Where are you based?

I'm in the South West Cheltenham in Gloucestershire.
There's not many Vac repair shops within 5 Mile radius but there are a few individuals that advertise on Face book that our on my doorstep and advertise repairing Dysons . I agree Dysons are a good earner providing you can get the work I don't want to start advertising while I'm still working for my current employer i can see that will go down like a lead balloon.
Out of interest have you noticed that a lot of your spare part suppliers haven't got what you need, I wanted Some carbon brushes for a Numatic machine same as Sebo X1 type I ended up getting them from Ebay they will be Non Genuine probably. But same with Mains Leads , Some Filters, Switches, bags and motors.

Is this you or the old employer? I can edit that in case of need.

If you need a chap to set you up a website, I have a good bloke.

There's a lot of shipping issues at the moment causing that. It'll level out later in the year hopefully.

Thanks for that I would appreciate it if you would remove or edit the advert i put up. Yes it is for my current employer so that would be good to see gone.
I'm going to do some flyers and test the water to see what response i get regarding going it alone. Thanks for your help .

If working from home and you don't want drop-in callers then just put only a mobile number and an email address in your ads. Facebook is useful if there's a local neighbourhood group or two. Make your prices inclusive of collection and delivery: I'm convinced that a lot of my business  is obtained because of the convenience factor for customers of not having to bring it to a shop. Lockdown has made this even more so, with so many people working at home during the day.
Obviously if you live in a more rural area then you will need to offer a wider collection zone, but I typically cover about a five mile radius, as it's an urban area.
MVacs is correct: there's plenty of demand, especially with cordless machines which regularly need batteries changing and heads and cyclones unblocking. Mains vacuums now form only about a third of my work. I'm no longer bemused by the inability of most people to carry out even the most basic maintenance work, such as washing a filter. They'll pay £300 or more, then bin it when the battery dies.
