DC41 Complete - How to Remove a Broken Canister Release Button Catch

The red release button on the canister of my DC41 broke.  My DC41 is the newer model and I have the new part.  How do I remove the broken red release button?  I know the new button just slides in place.  However, I don't want to break the tabs which keep the release button in place when removing the broken catch.  Thanks for any recommendations.
