Rattly After Brushbar Change
« on: December 18, 2021, 11:54:23 am »
I replaced the brushbar and white tube on my clutched DC14 Animal. The brush area seems to rattle a bit more now on carpets especially on the backstroke. I was unsure how to fit the brush as the instructions I found said things like “insert with tabs facing out and rotate to lock” but as far as I can see the bar just sits in place and doesn’t lock in any way just pulled in by the belt. Is that correct? The old one just jumped out when I pulled the belt up. Anything I could have done wrong? Seems to work and pick up just fine, just the vibrating.

Would need to see photos really to see if it’s in correctly- can you reply with photos?

It's OK thanks. I found a youtube video showing it more clearly. I see that it doesn't really 'lock' as such as I'd supposed just that the tabs need to be pointing back towards the body of the machine so there's no fore and aft movement..

So I'm still bothered by the rattly/vibrating noise from the brush. It's worse on the backstroke and goes away altogether if I press the front of the head gently down onto the carpet. So it seems that the head isn't pressing firmly enough at the front. I replaced the white tube at the same time as I replaced the brush. Anything I can do to increase the downwards pressure on the brush a bit? No problems with suction or pickup etc. just irritated by the noise.

The white tube you replaced, was it genuine or not?

We only use the genuine ones as non genuine ones are usually too stiff and cause the problem you describe.

I hope it was genuine. I got the tube, brush, screwdriver and belt lifter all from Manchester Vacs.  ;)

So the problem is that the end of the brush furthest from the belt is loose in its position. You can pull it up and down several mm. which is why there's a rattling noise if the front isn't pressed down. So I guess either the body or the sole plate is worn. I've packed the sole plate with a strip of aluminium and it's fine like that (!!!!) but I don't know whether a new sole plate would fix it or whether it's the housing.

A bit stumped now.

More likely to be the brushbar housing by a whisker I'd think, but we don't sell many of them or the soleplates for DC14s.

If you've modified it so it doesn't rattle, I'd be inclined not to fix it is it isn't broken now.
