Hello all,

I have a Dyson DC44 Animal cordless stick that is not working.

When the charger is plugged into the battery the light on the charger does not light up and the battery doesn't charge.

I thought I would start with the charger.

I have a multimeter but am not experienced with using it.

I noticed the charger outputs 2 different voltages; 24.35V and 16.75V.

Fumbling around with the multimeter I was able to get a read of around 24V but I couldn't get a reading around 16V.

I don't know what to touch with the multimeter to read the lower voltage output.

The plug has a thin pin in the middle of the plug, plus a surrounding metal "ring" with metal on the inside face of the ring and metal on the outside face of the ring.

Can someone tell me what to touch to measure the lower voltage output?

And, if I only get the 24V voltage output of the higher setting does that mean the charger has had it?

Regards,

fbagnato

IIRC, the outer sheath is the earth, the inner sheath is the lesser voltage and the central pin the higher one. On chargers with two outputs, if one is kaput, the charger is kaput.

Hello MVacs and thanks for your reply.

Excuse my ignorance, but what would I place my red and black multimedia probes on to check the voltage output for the lesser voltage?

Does that mean I would place the black multimeter probe on the outer sheath (earth) and the red multimeter probe  on the inner sheath (lesser voltage)?

it doesn't matter. If you place the MM leads the wrong way round you will just get a minus voltage reading instead of a positive one.

Hello macman,

Thanks for your reply.

I understand that but this charger has 2 voltages. I don't recall what I was touching but I was able to get a correct reading of the higher voltage but do not know what to touch to get the lower voltage reading.

Just want to make sure the charger is faulty before buying another charger.
