Oven has stopped working
« on: May 09, 2022, 10:19:44 pm »
Turned the oven on the other day and when I came back the 13A mains fuse in the plug had popped.  There was a slight smell.  When I took the cover off, I noticed the Rockwool stuff on the back was a bit singed near where the element is connected.

I removed the element and measured the resistance between the two prongs as being 21Ω.

Ordered a replacement element which arrived today, and the resistance on that is the same.

If I replace the element will it blow or is something else causing this?

The old element may be short circuit but only when it is glowing red
I would fit the element anyway, with the oven unplugged check the supply connections Live and Neutral continuity to earth with your meter - which will be the oven shell casing.

Ideally in this case you should be using an isolation tester to check before mains testing, i use a seaward.

You connect your device to the seaward,  plug the seaward into the supply then connect the earth from the oven to the earth test cable probe on the meter.
press earth bond test which does what it says, then isolation test, which applies 400v (off top of my head) loop into the device and will indicate any faults.

Ovens tend to get very hot as we know, grease and fat can run over cables, into switches etc

What is the brand of oven and model number ?

Also be worth checking the other elements if your appliance has them, many ovens have a shared neutral and its not unknown for elements not in use to cause a trip.

What is the brand of oven and model number ?

It's a Hotpoint SI4854PIX - less than five years old.

Right team, it turns out I was looking at the wrong element.  My gut instinct says this may be faulty:

On ovens with conventional cooking (top and bottom elements) it’s nearly always the bottom that fails.

Your instincts are correct.... :king:

The reason i asked for model number was to look it up and to see if there were other elements.
is this the top open element used as a grill function too ? careful if so as i believe there is a horizontal roller fan built into these ovens to circulate air from below, up and over the element, these can seize, fail and cause the elements to overheat.

Hotpoint cover is 5 years or it was, free parts but you pay labour - i know in 2017 it was £90 so now probably around the £120 mark.

get it replaced anyway, do a continuity check after best you can for earth in particular, ensure spade connectors that attach to elements are tight too.
When it's all done report back and invite everyone over for a roast dinner ?

Strange aint it, i worked for a hotpoint retailer 2012 - 2017 installing and repairing ovens (it was usually the door mech barb n hinges that dropped to bits) i never saw a bottom element fail - always the top one especially if it was a combined grill element - usually due to the top roller fan seizing or failing.

A replacement element is less than £25, I'll send the other one (which was £88) back.
