Is there any way to test if the motor is functioning correctly without stripping the whole machine down again?

Not really.

What I can tell you is this isn't something we encounter.

I’m stumped without having it in front of me. But I did have a thought you say it worse when you use hose and tools most of the crevice tools have either a slot or vein on the end to stop it sticking to the floor and causing a lack of air to pass over the motor. The small wide tool has a groove running across it to again allow air to still flow even on thick carpet. Are you using Non genuine Dyson tools that are being sucked to the floor and stopping airflowthrough the motor.
That’s all I can think of like Mvacs Ihave never come across this problem ever.

Thanks guys. I can't understand it either. All tools are genuine and it overheats just as bad in upright mode. The only time it doesn't cut out is when it is just left running without actually using it. I can't see it being the motor as it was overheating before I changed the motor - I think that's what killed it. It definately sounds like an airflow problem but I can't find any blockages. I have to just leave it for now and investigate further when I have more time. Thanks for your help.
