Author Topic: DC-15 How to attach cleaning head? (Read 6347 times)

We have a DC-15 All Floors which is about 5 years old. A few weeks ago, I failed to click the stand into place such that, when I let go of the handle, it fell back in an open position - "butterflied" if you will.

Since this occurrence, I cannot for the life of me get the cleaning head to remain attached to the yoke assembly. Looking at the parts diagram at http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/carmensvacuum_2184_10335784, it seems that the connection is with two gimble clips and a spring. With only the gimble clips, the cleaning head seems to "click" into place but will disengage after a few moments of use.

I have ordered what I think is the missing part -- a spring -- but again cannot reattach the cleaning head such that it will stay. I'm not clear on exactly where the spring goes.

I don't think any parts are actually broken, but I don't suppose I can swear to that. In any event, has anyone ever encountered and successfully repaired this problem? I would appreciate any ideas and/or pointers you can provide.

I am not sure exactly which spring you refer to?

To attach the cleaning head from this position:

Put the smaller of the clips in first:

Then the second, larger one locks under the smaller one as it is pushed home.

If there is no spring involved in that mechanism, then that certainly explains why I can't figure out where it goes

With only the clips, though, the "fix" doesn't seem to hold. I don't recall whether or not I tried playing with the order (smaller first) and will try that first chance I get.

I guess that if that still fails to hold, then it means there must be some damage either to the clips themselves or spherical piece to which they attach. No visible sign of damage, though....

Aha! Closer examination reveals that there is damage to the small clip... Picture is not that great, but I think you get the idea....

Wow. Can you believe I took this to a repair shop (Oreck, but said they fixed Dyson) who kept it for a week only to inform me that they had no idea as to how to fix it? Then I became confused and convinced that a spring was involved.

I feel pretty stupid, having now paid in excess of $30 for parts I didn't need and far beyond that in headaches over a $2.49 clip! Not only that, but I was seriously considering dumping the vacuum! As a wise man once told me, the price of education is high....
