Cheap Motors?
« on: November 29, 2011, 11:48:54 am »
Smoke and smells

I replaced the worn out original motor with a cheaper clone (new)....... I assumed slight smell was normal to running in.  It turned to smoke and I turned it off.  Commutator and brushes(?) rather a mess.

Second time, again clone from different supplier, worked fine for 10 mins then started to smell...... since I learn quick, I turned it off, stripped back to just the motor in its casing (in case there was unusual resistance from the clutch assembly or bands.  Ran again, still smells and commutator arm no longer has copper colour.

Should I expect the motor to cut out before significant damage is done?

I am reluctant to get a Genuine Dyson motor until I know that it is NOT ME.

 Please help.

With a decent quality motor yes.

However, did you replace both filters while doing this job?

Whose motors did you buy? One supplier we know of had a batch of bad ones recently.

Sparesaver and day2dayshop
Both these motors were the YDK style but they had power leads on opposite sides of the commutator unlike the original which had the two leads attached to the same side of the motor.

First (Sparesaver) I replaced both filters at the same time.

Second (Day2day)  I used original filters cleaned thoroughly.

I ran motor at each stage of assembly with this motor up to connecting the belt to the motor shaft to try to find problem.
Again after detecting slight smell with machine fully assembled including "cleaned" filters, I stopped the motor until stripped down to the bare motor in the casing.... no filters to restrict air and still there was a problem.

Before I cause Manchester Vacs a headache by getting a motor from you and still having problems (worst case), is there any other likely cause of overheating that I have failed to notice?  All airways were checked machine "functioned" correctly... it sucked and the brush went round freely and without unusual noises and all parts fitted together accurately and screws located without any need for pressure.

The ones you got - from eBay presumably - were they the ones without the thermal cut out screwed to the outside? If so, there was a bad batch of motors recently from one supplier that ended up all over the trade. They will likely be punted out all over eBay over the coming months.

I am guessing they were not the OEM ones that look almost identical to the original?

You wired them brown to red and blue to black didn't you? And had the brown cable running in and out of the switch (unless a 4 prong variant)?

You didn't wash a HEPA filter with water by chance did you?

Yes .... (I am hanging  my head in deep embarrasment and shame)

I did something right!

I didn't dismantle the switch (or am I missing something?)

Lets hope others learn from my mistakes (and maybe some dealers get an attack of honesty)

For all that our DC04 has done us proud over the past 12 years..... we used it to vac up a newbuild house when we moved in....loads of builders waste.  It has survived the mess of three young kids growing up and cleaned some very dirty car upholstry and mats.  The DC04 is now to be demoted to spare and has been replaced by a DC14 but the DC04 first love and best.

It is possible that having washed the HEPA with water, it became more blocked and overheated the motor. You are not supposed to wash those.  :-X

However, more likely you just got some of those dodgy ones that were/are floating about. In fact, because of those, we [and others] have sold so many motors recently that the supplier we use ran out and had to air freight some in. Last week, everyone ran out again and we are hoping for another batch this coming week.

The ones we usually have are OEM as far as I know, and I think I have needed to return one in the last 2 years. I am confident enough with them that I send them to Australia anyway.  :chuckle:

Happy ending  ;)

I have now fitted the Motor and a new hepa filter both supplied by Manchester Vacs and it is like having a new vacuum..... one that has a few bumps and scratches it is true but one that does the job better than before.

Thanks to MVacs for support, quality parts and complimentary soleplate wheels.

In fact, because of those, we [and others] have sold so many motors recently that the supplier we use ran out and had to air freight some in. Last week, everyone ran out again and we are hoping for another batch this coming week.

We had to fit very expensive genuine Dyson motors to two re-manufactured machines today that were going to Bulgaria and France because of the current shortage.  :duh:

OEM ones - that we prefer - are back in stock in about ten days. We have about a hundred on backorder. Lovemydyson, those ones we are using meanwhile - like we sent you - seem just fine. The codes tell us they came from a different manufacturer than the faulty ones that burn up that are doing the rounds on eBay currently.

In any event, we guarantee any new motor we supply for a year.

Do a Paypal claim for the ones you got stiffed on eBay for. You should get your money back. You will be out of pocket because you will need to return them by a tracked method (use City Link via parcel2go.com) but something back is better than nothing. Unscrupulous eBay sellers rely on apathy to rip people off.
