DC24 YDK main ball motor replacement - help!
« on: December 27, 2011, 12:37:25 pm »
I've finally got the main YDK motor to perform my 110v to 240 conversion, but it appears that I am having difficulty disassembling the machine to get to the motor. could anybody provide a guide/service manual/tips on how to get to the motor without breaking something?

To be exact, i've been able to get the left side loose but the right side (where it's held in place by the screw) is where i'm having trouble with. I guess I need to remove the flexible hose.. but maybe need a right angle torx screwdriver of sorts to be able to reach some of the screws.

Thanks!

If you still need help with this, I'll put something together for you after the holidays.

This is a US version machine if its a 110v, yes?

I would most definitely appreciate you doing that - I've put the machine back the way it is so I don't break something in the meantime.

Yep - it is a US version, i've acquired the 240V YDK motor and 240V brushbar assembly.

Four screws in the ball here:

Then the motor casing will come out.

Four more screws here:

Gives you access to the main motor.

Ha! This is the one that got me, I was under the impression that the hose was one assembly and screwed down, so I didn't try to pry at it.

Got the motor replaced, just had to meddle with the fit of the rubber shroud so it would line up just right.

I had one question - how tight do you guys get the main motor housing? I can tighten it till it's just snug but I noticed that the plastic would bend just ever so slightly - do reference the pictures.

Thanks for posting the pictures up mate - it surely cleared up my doubts!

You have assembled it a little wrong.

There are two pins on the inside of the casing that locate in holes on top of the motor. To get it in the right way, the motor has an arrow on it that lines up with a pointed pin as below.

Yeah - that almost got me initially until i saw the arrow and the protruding rubber tab. Got that lined up and it was a breeze. In fact I was able to take it apart a second time in just a  few minutes because I forgot to pull a rubber cap attachment that goes on top of the motor of the 110V one. But all's well that ends well - works like a charm now.

I tightened down the black motor case ever so slightly so it does angle just a bit like my pictures above, but only a bit - if not, it seemed just a little too loose for comfort.

Thanks for the help!

Hi, joined the forum today as my DC24 motor is sparking and smells. Found all this good stuff on here and have dismantled the beast ready for its new motor. Pity it's bank holiday as with the help on here it could have been fixed by tea time.

Cheers

Hello.... I have a question about the DC24 replacement motors!.....I have dismantled my sons machine....the photos were very helpful!..now with the new motor delivered and in my hands I find it is actually slightly different to the original...smaller in fact!!....which means that it doesn't sit in the housing correctly...any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
