DC33 makes high pitch noise
« on: July 14, 2012, 01:28:18 pm »
Its less than 6 months old, I have checked filters and all the places I think something could get stuck. The suction is fine, but the noise drives us insane!!!   :snivel:

Any ideas?

My wife is ready to put in the bin  :'( but there should be a better way right?

I also have this problem - engineer couldn't agree about the high pitched squeal but ordered a new cyclone assembly which took a month to come and has not made a bit of difference.  Only solution seems to be to wear noise reducing headphones!

I read it , thanks. I have cleaned filter and its not that. I doubt its the engine, its less than 6 months old. I think frankly it's just piss poor design that was not fully tested. It just looked good on the computer (CAD system), cost less to produce etc.

There should be a disclaimer on the front saying, We made this product of less plastic so we can save money, we found out afterwards that it can be a bit noisy (like standing next to a jet taking off or a F1 car) but we won't take the product back ha ha ha you are the worlds biggest sucker thinking a brand name would be any good! Note: deaf people have not complained yet!

Is the noise coming from the clutch maybe?

[the brush control knob area)

Could it be a cyclone air leak? There seems to be a design fault on the rubber seal. We are getting many DC33's in with this problem.

Tried control knob but noise is definitely coming from the cyclone - doesn't squeal when you take this part off.

Jan, was it a Dyson engineer that ordered you a new cyclone?

Yes - he didn't agree that it was making a noise but ordered a new cyclone unit anyway

I too suffer with this problem, especially when you are cleaning a small room like a cloakroom, when the sound really intensifies.  It totally hurts my ears and the kids' hamster always hides - LOL  It is a high-pitched screeching sound and makes for a VERY unpleasant experience.

I have used Dyson for 16 years - I wouldn't even consider using another machine, even when living in the USA where they are not a common brand.

The DC33 however has made me re-think my view and I am no longer a happy advocate.  It is so lightweight that I often pull it over when I vacuum, the noise is horrific and I am not overly impressed with its ability to pick-up successfully either.  After living abroad for years, I figured that in my absence Dyson had sold out to China and was making a poor quality product whilst relying on its previous good reputation and keeping the prices up.

The "award winning customer service" member explained to me that the noise was part and parcel of their new technology and that the machine itself is light because they have removed the metal components so that more people can carry it around.  I was offered an engineer (my Dyson is only 5 months old and has made this noise since its first outing!!!!) visit; but was told I would have to pay for the call-out because the problems I am experiencing sound normal for that particular design.

Needless to say I do not want to throw good money after bad and remain a very unsatisfied customer......  The noise IS REAL - find a solution Dyson!!!!!

This is the reply that I received today from Dyson - is this any help to fellow sufferers?

Thank you for your email dated 17th July. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to your email.

Please be assured that all Dyson cleaners are extensively tested, and that noise levels are comparable with other household appliances.

At Dyson we take all product performance criteria very seriously and are constantly striving to improve the acoustic signature of our machines, including DC33, which is no exception. The tone you refer to at 6470hz is indeed the blade passing frequency of the vacuum motor and is an unfortunate consequence of high flow motors of this sort. It is actually the same specification and variant motor that is used in DC14 but the fan tone is not as dominant on that machine.

Ha, ha, ha, well the noise level is not comparable with any of my other household appliances!!!

It is an "unfortunate consequence" they are not kidding, so why not fix the problem, or give unhappy customers a refund?????

I can't believe that this is the response from an award winning customer service team!!   :'(
