dc04 intermediate working
« on: June 12, 2012, 10:00:56 pm »
I am experiencing problems with my Dyson dc04. When using for approx 1.5 Hours Dyson cut
next day used for outapprox 30mins cut out again then would not start at all. After 1 week plug Dyson
 in it fused the circuit.

Removed the motor checked the cable for breaks OK checked switch OK Bench run the motor
the first 2 mins motor tempreture 34C after 5mins tempreture running at above 50C the plastic
housing very hot.  Checked the brushes approx 2.5 millimetres showing  the whole assembly very
hot.

Would it be advisable to change the motor.

Is the motor sparking when bench tested?

If it fused your electrical circuit than I would suggest the motor has an internal short. Personally, I would test no further and swap the motor.

However, if you are determined, and have an ohmmeter, it should read around 7Ω across the motor terminals.

The obvious fault was with the motor,I ordered a replacement it arrived on Monday (excellent service).Readings on both motors read the same approx 7ohms,the only conclusion appeared to be the thermal cutout, the motor when bench tested was reading over 50C, normal working temperature seems to be 35C.As the windings, armature, and brushes where clean and free from burning, could the terminal leads complete with the capacitor and cutout be sold as a separate piece of kit, this would save the cost of a fitting a new motor and for a few pounds could bench run for temperature overload.

We do have them on their own, but very seldom do people ask for them.
