DC14 burning smell
« on: August 26, 2012, 11:13:58 am »
My dyson motor is smelling and the noise has gone from a high pitch to a low pitch, so i have switched it off.

any ideas what may be the problem

It is 5 yrs old and i clean out the main filter regulary.  never cleaned out the filter under the collection bin though.

I was using the hose to clean the smoke detectors and it suddenly made a lower pitch noise and the smell from the motor developed.

It was last night when this happened and i have just cleaned out the hepa filter as it had a lot of hair in there and i knocked out a lot of dust (filter under the bin).

The motor is still not working correctly.  it is now making spluttering noises, so i have turned it off again.

If you haven't cleaned the post-motor filter in 5 years, it's not that surprising that the motor is burning out. The blocked filter will have strangled the airflow and probably caused it to overheat.
How have you been cleaning out the pre-motor filter? They're washable.

I am a pretty practical person and clean out the washable filter regulary.  Never touched the filter under the bin as i wasnt aware you could touch it.  Ridiculous saying this filter is for a life time and it isnt.

If the motor has burnt out what is the cost of a new one.  I am already looking at new hoovers and will not touch a dyson again.

I have signed upto WHICH and am probably going for a vax which has a six yr guarentee.  It is £130 in comet, but i can get it online for £96.  also going for a cylinder model this time.

Will my dyson animal me worth anything ?  I also have the animal motor brush to sell as well.

New DC14 motors are £20-£35 depending on where you source them, and not too tricky to fit. Much cheaper (and better) than a new Vax. A new Dyson will carry a 5 year warranty-subject to proper maintenance.
The post motor filter is for the lifetime of the motor, if you accept Dyson's approach. The instruction manual makes it quite clear that the filter can be accessed and cleaned or replaced.
If you decide not to replace the motor, your Dyson will fetch up to £20 on ebay or Gumtree for spares or repair, if otherwise in good condition.

Well a new motor at £30 approx may be a better bet.  Where do you get them from ?

I see manchester vacs do the part.  Are these the only place in the uk to do the motors ?

You can get them on ebay, but then you then take your chances. There are some poor quality Chinese clones around.

We had a deal with some of those cheapo ones once expecting they were likely OK.

It then cost us a fortune to replace them all with proper ones that work when the cheapies all flaked out one after the other.  :D

Now we only sell ones from one manufacturer.
