Test for power to the switch using a multimeter (as long as you know what you are doing). It's more likely to be the cable than the switch, especially if the power loss is intermittent. They go either at the chassis entry point or at the plug.
if you had a sudden failure along with burning smells, popping noises etc, then the motor has probably burned out.
What have you cleaned?

Well washed everything that needed as I have 4 collies so plenty hair to clear up.I have not gone into main body,Last week I was doing the stair carpet,a very lengthy job and it did shut off,I thought it was a fuse, checked that,ok.My husband said let it cool down and see what happens, there was no burning smell,it did start again later, so hoovered living room, put the hoover away.I have used it several days but when I went to do the stairs today,it won't start .

Have you washed or replaced both filters, checked all airways, bottom hose?
Saying you've washed 'everything' doesn't really tell us much, you need to be specific.

Eliminating the cable and switch is very simple with a multimeter. If there's power at the switch then the motor must be the most likely problem area.
Change the post motor filter while you are in there though, and pressure wash the cyclone.
