Dyson dc07 small ball found
« on: December 22, 2012, 03:49:13 am »
My girlfriend went to empty the dust canister on her dc07 (purple/red) and out rolled a small red ball matching the color of the dyson.  Does anyone know where this ball is supposed to be?  I'm pretty sure it's not intended to just float around in the canister freely, otherwise people would be throwing them out all the time.  Looking at the schematics there appears to be no mention of this small 1" circular plastic "ball".  Does anyone have any ideas?  Thanks.

It's slightly smaller than a golf ball.  It matches the color to the Dyson perfectly (salmon/reddish), and appears to be about the same grade of plastic too.  She said the suction of the vacuum drastically reduced after it dropped out.  It's the Dyson DC07 'root cyclone 8' model.

I cant think of anything that looks like that in a DC07. Can anyone else?

I think you need to look at other reasons it has lost suction.

Post up a photo of the offending item just to be on the safe side.

I can't think of anything it might be on a DC07 either - if it was in the bin, I'd imagine it's been sucked up and colour is just a coincidence maybe??

That would be fantastic to hear that this part isn't required, or related to the dyson, especially so since I can't seem to locate the little ball right now (we just moved and placed it in a box for safe-keeping).  Definitely a weird coincident, especially since the color was spot on, but it would explain why I never found any documentation anywhere on it.  Once I locate it, I'll snap a photo, and post.

Thank you all so much for the quick responses!!  Merry Christmas all!

I know this is a long time since the previous post but I have come across exactly the same problem on my Dyson DC07 HEPA.   I detached the container in order to empty it and as I swung it away from the Dyson the little red ball came out from somewhere and bounced across the floor.  I have been onto Dyson Support who basically took the view that it was not possible and would not follow it up, but I can assure you one hundred per cent that the ball could only have dropped out of the Dyson - and it would have been impossible to hoover up even if there was the slightest chance it had arrived in the house by some other means - impossible!  I still have the ball and have attached a photo of it.

Can anyone explain where it came from please?  Renderking - if you are still around - you are not alone!

Madrat - I do not doubt what you say.    But I can only repeat that the ball shown came out of the Dyson DCo7 HEPA.    It bounced onto a quarry tiled floor and could not - repeat not - have come from anywhere else.

Eureka!! That's it alright!  Yours even matches my color.  I came across mine in a box a few months ago, but once again, was unable to locate to snap a photo of for this reply.  Obviously I never did figure out where it went, and since no one else seemed to know what I was referring too, I concluded it was just a coincidence the color matched and chalked it up to be a kidney stone of some sort my vacuum passed.

If you do find out where, or if anyone else has any ideas, please update this post.

There's no ball in a DC07. Must have been lodged somewhere and fell out when you emptied it, a ball that size could probably get through the hose and in, lucky it didnt clog up though!

Unless its an old old air freshener, or someone wanted to see a small ball whiz around the cyclone!

A bit of background:  My wife and I are pensioners.   We live alone.  We have had no children playing in the house for decades.   We have had no pets in the house for decades.  The house is kept sparkling clean. I spent 30 years as an Electro-Mechanical engineer in the Royal Navy.   I was a Fellow of the Society of Electronic and Electrical engineers until a few years ago.   We have never used air fresheners with balls in them. There is no possibility whatsoever of this ball being sucked up around the house.   I have never met, or been in contact with, renderking prior to this.   I have no idea where he lives and he has no idea where I live.  I had not even opened the container when the ball fell out - only disconnected it from the upright.
Perhaps someone can explain how two people, who have never been in contact before (and who still do not know each other), have had exactly the same experience, some years apart, with exactly the same size and colour ball, both balls being made of the same plastic and both seemingly falling out of a Dyson when the collector was disconnected from the upright (I am assuming that was renderkill's girlfriend's experience but, if not, could he clarify please)?  Coincidence?   Not a chance!  I'm beginning to think a small oriental person in the factory was popping a small ball inside DC07s on a random basis and that Sir James will be coming on-line shortly to tell renderkill and I that we have found the equivalent of the Cadbury's Golden Egg!
Despite their own possibly negative experiences of this can the experienced forum contributers ask around to see if any of their contacts in Dyson have ever come across this before?

My particular vacuum is DC07 serial no: 111-us-a33902 and I'm writing from Chicago, IL.  I just emailed dyson support with your photo... curiosity has gotten the better of me.

renderking - I hope you have more success than me.   I have sent them the photo twice; once direct on the 7th March 2014 (on the advice of one of their technicians called Matt) and then via Reception at their head office in the UK (on the advice of one of the two lady receptionists who said she would make sure Dyson Support received my email) asking them to at least acknowledge that my problem was receiving attention.   That was on the 27th March 2014.  I have had absolutely no response so far from either emails - but I am an optimist and live in hope!
