Howeling noise
« on: December 30, 2012, 07:14:42 pm »
My DC25 is making a howeling noise. I have checked the vacum lines and they are clear. Any suggestions?

Does it still make the noise if you take the HEPA filter out of the ball and switch it on?

Hey the noice went away. Now the question is was the filter installed incorrectly or does it need to be replaced. It doesn't seem like it's very dirty, when I hold it up to the light I can clearly see thru it.

It's the black rubber seal on the filter that causes the noise I believe. It doesn't create an air tight seal in the motor housing which creates the howling.

The seal sits in a recess on the filter - try pulling the seal out of the recess by 1mm or so and see if that helps.

Failing that, yes a new filter should sort the problem.

Thank you for the help. When I look at the seal I can see were a section of it has collapsed. I like this fix a lot better then a new motor. Again thanks

I have found it common on the DC25, it is the filter in the ball.  The test is to take the filter out and see if the noise goes.  There is nylon mesh stuck to each side of the filter but often this is not fixed tightly and vibrates as suction reduces. Try using a couple of thin lines of contact adhesive in both directions to fix it to the inner filter.
The problem seems to occur most when filters are not washed out regularly and the motor is having to overwork.

We find sometimes they howl as they are powering down even with a new filter.

Yes mine and my mothers do that when you switch them off.

A thin smear of silicon grease around the rubber seal will usually sort it out.

Thanks for that - I'll try some.
