Bags versus bagless non dyson vacuum cleaners
« on: January 16, 2011, 11:36:42 am »
The other day a customer came to see me and complained heavily about their current vacuum, a Hoover bagless model, only lasting them 15 months before burning out in a spectacular fashion.
Why did his previous Hoover Turbo Master last almost 15 years and the new one less than two years?

Well, it’s really simple:
Bagless vacuum cleaners (non Dyson ones) clog up much faster than your old bag vacuums. The bagless filter area is much smallerthan a paper or cloth bag

A Hoover Turbo vacuum cleaner paper bag has a surface filter area of 2596 cm².
A bagless Electrolux Vitesse vacuum cleaner filter has a surface area of only 890cm²
See the difference

That’s why you could get away with changing the paper bag only once a month but now in your bagless vacuum you some times have to clean the filter every time you use it

Now as a dyson relies on its heavily patented  cyclonic system it does not rely on the filter to stop the dust .

The other bagless vacuum cleaners, no matter how good they are, need the filter and  will clog.
That is why I always tell my customers if you can’t afford a dyson get a vacuum with a peper bag it will last longer and the bags cost less than the filter in your Hoover Vax Electrolux that has to be replaced every six months any way

I had a hoover turbo power or was it a turbo master some time ago.. say from 1998 until 2005, bought from a car boot sale for £3 and it blew up on my mother, at the time I didn't know they were like sort of collectors items now  :'( Ours had one of those weird hoses that was a plastic tray that slotted onto the soleplate with a hose coming off it.. my mother loved that thing lol

I am still looking for a Hoover Junior on the car boot sales for under a tenner. They are collectable now. There is a topic here: https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,117.msg384.html#msg384 that got me thinking about it.

We clean our shop with an old 80's Electrolux bagged machine that the bin men gave us.  :underchair:  :-X

It stops people trying to buy it!  :o

Performance is pretty average, not as good as a Dyson. We built a Harlequin© (our design: many, many, many colours) for our shop floor. We had thoughts of an unmistakeable loan machine to service customers by making one in zany colours. But we used our Dyson Harlequin© once, and someone came in the shop, and exclaimed "I love it", and bought it on the spot, and ran off giggling with it. Every other unique zany coloured machine we have made has been sold in moments.

Perhaps we should step up very colourful machines made up from our huge parts bins and stock, in the most zany a colour as we can produce. Some people like
Psychedelic Dysons ©. When we build one, we never have it long enough to clean the shop floor with it. That's why we use the old free Electrolux.

When we take our next member of staff on, we will build more Dyson Harlequins©

We expect that by seeking advice here, you are competent enough to be able to make any electrical installations safely and in a safe and legal manner in your jurisdiction. If you are in any doubt whatsoever, do consult an electrician. You implement any advice you read at this site at your own risk.

I personally think that a canister vacuum cleaners (the kind that rolls around on wheels

with a longhose and a small head) is the best. that way you can get the vacuum head into

small spaces and under beds. the stand up vacuums can be more difficult to work with in

small spaces, and often do not fit under furniture.

OK, I'll be honest and say that I'm not a great fan of bagless machines when it comes to emptying time. Dyson are the easiest and cleanest of the bunch though, which isn't difficult because many others are truly awful.

A former client of mine had a Vax Swift upright, the sort with a pleated cartridge filter in the middle of the dirt bin. Why anyone would want to scrape and knock dust off that thing each time the cleaner needed emptying is beyond me. The only thing it had going for it was the fact that it was cheap. This is why I always took my own vacuums to each job, because you never knew what horrors awaited in people's cupboards.

For quick and clean emptying you can't beat a bagged vacuum, especially those with high filtration synthetic bags. But they can be very expensive, and sometimes it's nice to be able to get rid of the dirt as soon as you're done, rather than have it sitting there for weeks and stinking the bag up. And I've yet to find any other cleaner, bagged or bagless, that includes all the little user-friendly features you get with a Dyson.

Cheers,

Kirk
