DC07 breaking belts
« on: January 28, 2013, 02:25:38 pm »
Hi  My DC07 has started breaking belts, almost instantly, I have stripped it down as far as I can, but stuck until I buy a Torx driver, my bits do not fit.  I have also ordered Angus Black's book.  Everything has been cleaned, the drive shaft from the motor gets really hot in about 5 seconds, and the belt burns through in under 10 seconds.  The shaft feels smooth, and there is no sign of chaffing anywhere.  The motor sounds normal.  Any ideas? PLEASE!

Is it a clutch model? and is the brush bar turning?
Could be a faulty clutch if it is a clutch model, or it could be the brush bar is seized perhaps.
If @ first you dont succeed "scrap it"

The brush bar was running freely, my wife advises me that the motor runs noisily, i cant tell as I am partially mutton. The belt was running freely, until it snapped.  I have run the motor with no strain on the shaft and there is no heat in the shaft what so ever.  I then put the shaft under strain, by running an improvised belt from the shaft and around a screwdriver, the belt lasted about 20 seconds, with very little tension on it, snapped after burning through.  I felt the shaft, and got a blister, and lost layers of skin.  Does this lead you to think it might be the clutch? if so what do you recommend? my thoughts are not to attempt to dismantle further, until I have my book, as I am a dab hand at getting things apart, it is the putting back together, that leaves a bit to be desired, also I have the diagnostic skills of a pleb, apologies to all plebs.  Thanks for your help, I will keep posting to let you know how it is resolved. :'(

Is there any movement in the motor spindle (shaft as you call it) if you try and push it side to side? By the sounds of it I would suggest the bearing at the base of the spindle has gone kaput and that is what is causing the blistering heat and noise when switched on.

I am sorry to say I think it's new motor time!

I have now looked at the brush bar, which was running freely, then only one end ran free, and then totally seized, took it apart, cleaned and greased and now running fine again, hopefully this is the answer, pity it was running freely when I first looked.  Thanks for the help guys, no doubt I'll be back.

I have a none clutched model which keeps breaking the belts but seems to be burning through them but the motor is good as it has been replaced recently with no problems just seems to be melting them and I can't figure out why any ideas?

Take out the brush bar, hold it between your chest and one palm and try to spin it. It should spin freely. If you can't (and I bet you can't), it is seized.

You can sometimes strip them, clean out the muck, lubricate the bearings, but they are usually shot. We have new ones >>here<< in case off need.

There isn't much else it could be on a non-clutched machine.

If the brush roller gets jammed and causes the belt to break, the hot sticky rubber can be deposited on the motor pulley, before fitting a new belt make sure this is clean and silver looking and not black or, as is sometimes the case, rusty!
