Pcb output
« on: January 29, 2013, 01:00:23 pm »
Hi folks,

Looking for some expert advice if possible....
My wife saw a brief flash from the motor end of the brush bar
Head and then the bar stopped.

Pressed the reset but no luck.

Suspected the motor so took brush head apart. Belt is fine.

Checked power supply to pcb. 230V ac there.

disconnected motor and checked pcb dc output pins but 0v.

I'm assuming from this it's the pcb, but could a fault with the motor cause the pcb to fail?

I'd order a pcb but they're non returnable so want to know if there are any more tests I can do?

I measured resistance across the motor brush ends (are they the two brass contacts on either side of the plastic part of the motor housing?)

It measured around 600 ohms. The two motor terminals measured open circuit...

Any advice appreciated,

Jim

Take off the cleaner head, do you have power coming from the machine to the cleaner head?

What model machine is this please?

Its a dc24. Standard model.

Yes. I disconnected the pcb. measured 230v ac across the supply lead.

There is no voltage on the pcb  output pins with the machine running, the head released from the upright position and the grey brush switch next to the power switch in the on position.

A PCB is the likely culprit then, but the flash you mention is usual of a motor. One can occasionally take out the other. Seldom does a PCB go alone. Occasionally, but very seldom.

Smell the motor, does it smell burned?

Maybe smells a bit but not terrible.

Is there any way to test the motor?

It's 230v dc which I don't have a supply to test with.

That's the difficulty at home. We have other machines we can test on.

Based on a visible flash (indicating motor), and now no output from the PCB, I would be buying a cleaner head and using the current one as a future source of spare parts.

If I were to bring it to the shop, could you test it for me?

Ahh, I didn't know you were local. Yes, we could. Leave it stripped down for ease and speed. Bear in mind we are closed Wednesdays.

We keep PCB's, motors and heads, so either way you will go away with it working. Location and other info relevant to visitors is >>here<<.
