DC04 Zorbster clutch removal
« on: February 11, 2013, 03:49:00 pm »
My old clutch needs to be replaced, but I am having trouble removing it - I've watched two Youtube videos, where they just needed a tug on the two old belts, and out they came (I have removed the coloured knob at the outer end).  Mine will not come out that way (by pulling on the belts), because there is a spindle at the wider end that is stopping it being lifted out.  Any advice please?

In the videos, in both cases, the wider end of the clutch is missing the spindle I have on mine - do I have some kind of strange, none standard version of a DC04?

Ok, after much trawling through You Tube, and Googling endlessly, I have come to the conclusion that us Zorbster owners are in a big minority.  But I figured out the problem eventually - the front housing, whatever it's called, also has to come off, so that the clutch can be lifted out.  This needs two purple plastic circlips (I think they are called) to be removed, then gently ease off the front assembly.  The clutch lifts out, the new one goes in, then reverse all the other steps.  I'm doing that next, but hope I don't encounter any more problems.

Indeed, the Zorbster has a unique clutch.

It would have been helpful if those videos out there which dealt with the regular clutch, had also included the extra step needed for the zorbster.

Drat, I have everything back together - the brush goes round when the handle is lowered, but doesn't when the handle is upright.  Only problem is now I have no suction!  Have I done something wrong in reassembling, or is there another problem I can't detect.
(I also checked, and no suction at the top of the handle when I move that cover, either).

Here I am again - I've washed the filter at the top, which was quite dirty, and it's now drying on the radiator.  Before I did that, I reseated all the various bits that clip on, having checked them for blockages (none) and I did get some suction at the top of the wand, though it didn't seem as much as it used to have.  I'll reassemble again, once the filter is properly dry, and try again.  Is it possible to buy a set of rubber seals for this machine?  Perhaps that's the problem.

the brush goes round when the handle is lowered, but doesn't when the handle is upright.

That is normal.

Set your clutch to auto, and it shouldn't spin the brushroll when upright.

Thank you, I had worked out that my clutch was working normally, I've read that many websites and watched several You tubes this last day or so - now I think that I could do with a set of the three main rubber seals that don't seem to have such perky flanges to create the best seal., that is, when looking at the front of the machine, top right, top left and lower left  of the bin, if that makes sense - is it possible to buy them on their own please ?

You can get them of course, but I probably wouldn't bother. They are not supposed to be a tight seal and even if they are a bit tired, they are unlikely to affect performance noticeably.

Thank for your reply, it's comforting to know I can get them.  I've wrapped a few turns of crochet thread under each flange, and definitely seem to have better suction now, so I think I'll keep trying to find a supplier.

We'll send some used ones to you if you feel you need them. We have never yet sold any new ones since we have been open. Just send Claire an email at claire@ [domain] and she will arrange to get some out to you.

Send her a photo of exactly the location of which ones you want so there is no confusion.

Although, I fit one every blue moon. Usually people who think they need them have misdiagnosed.
We expect that by seeking advice here, you are competent enough to be able to make any electrical installations safely and in a safe and legal manner in your jurisdiction. If you are in any doubt whatsoever, do consult an electrician. You implement any advice you read at this site at your own risk.

Thank you so much, I don't think it can do any harm, and I still think I improved the suction by doing what I did.  I'll contact Claire.  Many thanks.
