Front soleplate problem on Dyson DC01
« on: February 22, 2013, 04:15:16 pm »
We have what I know to be an old DC01, which to a point is still giving good service. However we have a very annoying problem with it. After use and pushing it to the cupboard where it is stored the front sole plate always drops down and as part of it's journey is over a polished floor it scratches the floor, so we have to pick it up and carry it.

My question is, is there a way to tighten this up so that it stay's up when not being used as a vacuum.

Many thanks.

Is this a fixed or swivel soleplate model?

If you don't know the difference, there is a topic >>here<< that explains the differences.

Although, from what you have said, I suspect its a swivel soleplate model and the soleplate or the carrier are damaged.

If you could post a photo (>>instructions here<<) of it, we could advise you better.

I would think that the sole plate(front) of the machine is classed as swivel. This is what causes the problem.

That looks like a fixed soleplate to me. Although, that machine appears to have been assembled from more than one donor.

Can I see a photo of the underside please?

I am beginning to see what you mean now by fixed or other. In the photo I have sent it is the section on the front of the cleaner (with the yellow band) that is dropping down and causing the problem.

It would appear that I have got the description of the part causing the problem wrong.

It is the whole front assembly that drops when the machine is moved to storage. Normally when finished with the machine by placing the handle in the upright position the whole of the front would remain off the floor until the machine is wanted again. Then by purring a foot on the front it drops to carry out the vacuuming.

I hope this explains the problem better.

It looks to me like a fixed head body has been fitted to a swivel soleplate machine. The upright locking mechanism differs if that is the case. Have you rebuilt it with a donor machine?

Although, this machine isn't designed for hard floors, and is about twenty years old now. As you mention hard floors, it might be time to upgrade it.

If you can post a photo of the underside, I might be able to offer something more constructive.

Thanks for your reply, I attach photo as requested. I should point out that this machine has never been anywhere for repair so the sole plate is as was fitted when the machine was built. The only repair to the machine has been a new brush and belt which I fitted myself.ila_rendered

That is a fixed sole-plate machine. Some parts are not available for those now.

If the full head unit does not lock into the upright position, the problem is with the upright lock.

Here is a later one that has a wheel.

On yours it will be a metal clip probably that does the same job......

I expect that is broken......

You can, but why not identify if that is actually the problem first?

I realise what you are saying, but how do I get all the front assembly off the machine to check it out.
