Author Topic: 110v DC28 plugged into 220V - burning smell and lights don't work (Read 10767 times)

I have a DC28 from the US. I currently live in the UK (active military). Normally I plug my vacuum into a transformer. My house cleaner is new and didn't realize we have both 110v and 220v plugs/appliances. She plugged my Dyson into the 220v plug and ran it for about 2 minutes before my husband caught her. We plugged it up to the 110v transformer and turned it on. It still sucks and vacuums however it has a burning rubber smell that won't go away, none of the lights work, and the function to choose the type of pile won't work. I can only get it to vacuum on low pile. What do you think is wrong with it? The motor must not be done for since it will turn on and work but it is definetly not okay. I called and the UK Dyson retailer can't help me for repairs. I am not sure if there is a part or something that I can order from the US Dyson retailer so I can repair myself. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You have a dead Dyson...if the motor still runs, it won't for much longer. Sorry.

What replacement parts should I buy to fix it? I see they sell a replacement panasonic motor. Is that all I will need?

Yes I would like it to stay 110v. I will only be in the UK one more year.

You wont source a 110v motor in this country. Google up Crucial Vacuum in the States, you will get one online from them. Although, I don't think they deliver out of the US (as many US companies wont). A US military address will get around that though.

As we don't have that model in the UK though, I am not familiar with what else might have burned out. Hopefully, one of our American members might chime in.......

It will have likely burned out the PCB as well, they look like this:

Part number: 915771-01 and usually about $50.

My money would be on a main motor and a PCB. But the main motor wants bench testing first really.

You have blown the circuit board to bits. The dc28 only has one motor and uses a complex Pnumatic system to adjust a variable clutch and cams to lower the brush further into or out of the pile of the carpet. Some motors can survive been spun at twice their voltage but circuit boards cannot. Normally if you are bassed in a country by your military they will be able to help you get parts to get your machine repaired.

Dyson UK don't support the DC28 as it isn't sold here. Parts would have to come from the US.

Contact them it wont hurt to try especially due to your circumstance. Other wise contact your military liaison. They are always willing to solve problems like this
