dc04 not picking up from brush end
« on: April 13, 2013, 08:08:59 pm »
Hi - I have replaced both filters, checked hoses, brush is going round, suction is good, no blockages, yet it will not pick up dirt from the carpet :'( Could the brush be worn so not moving the dirt off the carpet??

I have the exact same problem with mine, using the wand the suction is good, i've been using it with the stairs tool to clean my house cos thats the only way to get it to work.
I've changed the filters top & bottom for new ones and cleaned the brush bar off, but still the same. well not the same, suction got better with the new filters but it still wont pick up dirt off the floor.
the brush bar spins round  at a fair rate and if i press a rung onto it quite hard it does not stop so can assume the belt is tight.
could it be that the brushes have worn down as they don't seem to stick out of the sole plate very far?
my dyson is a DCO4 brush control grey and yellow

thanks

Is the brush spinning when the machine is reclined?

Have you checked the bottom hose for obstructions? This one.....

hi yes I have just been and removed that part to check, there was nothing in it.
it's absolutely useless at picking stuff up, particularly large particles that i can see. I can go over it again and again but it doesn't pick anything up. tonight I got out my work hoover, a henry, and it nearly sucked the carpet up, it was hard work moving the floor tool about as it was sucking that hard. so I think theres defo something wrong with my dyson. the suction is good with the cleaner upright and i'm using the flexible hose with a the stairs tool or the brush tool.

If the machine is working from the back hose, and filters are OK, and the brush is turning, and the soleplate is fitted properly, there must be an obstruction between the valve carriage (the pipe that comes off with two buttons) and the head; which is the hose I mentioned above.

Other than that, I wonder if the belts have stretched and the brush isnt spinning properly when in contact with the floor.

Hi - mine is the yellow and grey dco4 absolute and appears to have the exact same problem as has been identified by the other chap. I have checked out the small hose already and there is also no blockage in the pipe you suggest, so I can only think the brushes on the roller are worn or the roller stops spinning when under load i.e. on the carpet. Since changing the filters the suction is mega. You can feel the suction on the carpet now but it just won't pick up.

well i think i have made it better, the flexi hose from the valve carriage and the head had a leak where the pipe entered the grey plastic bit that fits onto the carriage, not a visible split so to speak but if i blocked up one end of the hose and blew into the other, air leaked out. so i put a bit of duct tape round it and it seems to work better now, I don't think i've ever hoovered the house this much, the carpets looked clean as i had gone round yesterday with the dyson , and then with the henry to finish them off yesterday, but today i've gone round the whole house and have now got an inch of dust in the bottom of the cannister and a big lump fluff

Mike: Run it, recline it, touch the brush with the palms of your fingers. If it hurts, all is well. If the brush slows down or stops, we'll suspect the clutch.

Fenwick: That pipe doesn't often split to be honest, but a used one is dirt cheap (they are so good we have never sold a new one). Pull it off, find the split and replace it if necessary.

OK so I've done the hand test and still have all my fingers! Managed to stop the brush quite easily with my hand so guess its the clutch. I presume it's an easy job I can look up on youtube?? Thanks for your advice.

First take out the brushroll and check it spins free.

Look at the white wheel on the clutch, if its black or burned, clutch is the culprit.

Clutch swap tutorial is here: https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,748.msg3028.html#msg3028

If the clutch just needs belts, and you are adventurous, there is a guide here: https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,748.msg2556.html#msg2556

I have fitted a new clutch and the roller bar is spinning but I still don't think it's picking up particularly well though suction is now good after both filters changed. Any suggestions as to where to go now? Thanks

When reclined, check the cleaner head is in good flat contact with the floor.

Was the brushroll bearings free?
