Dyson DC18 won't turn on
« on: April 23, 2013, 08:57:06 pm »
Hi,

I have been asked to look at a hoover for a friend which is no longer working. Apparently it just turned off and then wouldnt turn back on again. I have had a good look to see if there are any blockages etc. and i can't see anything that would stop the machine functioning. I checked to see if the brush bar would still power up which it did. I then checked to see if the power switch had failed by swapping the switch which powers the brush bar (which i knew was working), with the power switch. The machine still wouldn't power up. All the electrical cabling appears to be in good working order so i can't see why it wouldn't power up unless the motor has failed. Are we likely to be looking at a replacement motor here?

Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Mark

You said it wont turn on, but then said the brushbar is working?

So the brushbar is running but the main motor isn't?

Hi MVacs,

Yes, that is correct. Does this mean that the motor is working? I'm not sure whether this model has an independent brushbar motor or not.

Cheers,

Mark

Yes, it has a brushbar motor and a main motor.

It sounds like you need to whip out the main motor and bench test it.

Thanks MVacs,

Is this a difficult job to do? Also i'm presuming i will need some special electrical testing equipment to be able to do this? How much would we be looking at for a replacement motor if it has failed? If its an uneconomical fix then i will just have to go back to my friend and tell them it's knackered i suppose!

Cheers,

Mark

New ones are £45 with delivery I think, We probably have a used one at half that if a budget repair.

You'll need a T15 screwdriver to strip it down, if the motor has gone, you will likely be able to see it on the armature.

I don't think we have an 18 motor strip down guide actually......... holler if you get stuck.

Hi MVacs,

Motor is out of the machine and i can't see anything out of the ordinary but im no expert by any means! When you talk about the armature im guessing this is inside the motor? The casing looks sealed and i can't see any obvious way of getting inside. Any chance you can give me a few hints on how to get in and what im looking for once im inside? Many thanks for your help.

Cheers,

Mark

Look at this bit

It should be smooth and shiny. If it is black and burned, the motor is shot.

If it looks OK, bench test the motor.

Hi Dyson Tech,

The copper part inside the motor with the slots in is as black as the ace of spades! I'm guessing this means the motor is knackered then.

Thanks for your help, looks like a new motor is required.

Cheers,

Mark
