Author Topic: Fitting a late type motor to a DC02. (Read 26633 times)

This is a question we have been asked a few times recently, so I wanted to put some information here on it.

The original DC02 motors 911929-01 YV500-3 and 901827-03 YV510 are no longer available.

We sell an alternative motor that will fit the DC02 here: >>DC02 Motor<<.

We do say this there:

Exactly how to do that is what I need to clarify.

The base of the replacement motor is slightly larger than the original. The rubber on the DC02 has some fins on it. The trick is when you refit the bottom rubber and come to insert it in the machine, the motor needs to be twisted against the rubber so the fins bend a little at the point they contact the machine casing.

Having done that, the new motor will then sit correctly and tightly in the chassis of the machine like so:

If you have done it correctly, the machine will then close up properly.

There is no need to force it to the point of breaking anything. Although, it will take some enthusiasm as it is a very snug fit. Sometimes you need to grind a little off the motor retainer in order that it clears the thermal cut out on the new motor.

From time to time, people who have bought a motor for a DC02 get back in touch and say it doesn't fit. It does - as you can see above. Rather than have to try and explain it on the phone over and over, I thought I would put a quick tutorial.

Thank you for excellent service. As you say twist and squish rubber. Make sure motor retainer fits close to the front of the motor, I ground a bit off to clear thermal cut out. Mind you don't trap wires, there are two small cut outs in wall between reeling drum compartment to motor compartment. I removed both wheel, a little difficult to get off but easy to replace and cut off moulded on plug before starting. I now expect my 1996 DC02 to last another 18 years.

Ah, we had a chap in yesterday who collected a DC02 motor and a few bits is all, and we were discussing exactly that. I just assumed you were he.

I have DC02 with motor YV-500-4 . In Your message is written possibility for YV-500-3 . So my question is if it is possible to use this motor also in my case.

Yes, this motor will be fine to replace a YV 500-4 as well. You may find it easier to trim some of the little fins on the motor rubber when fitting, and you will still need to notch out a little from your clear motor retainer so it can clear the thermal cut out.

Hi,

Thank you for the very quick delivery of the replacement motor for my dc02, it arrived at lunchtime today, however I'm having a bit of a struggle with it. Your tutorial is very helpful but I'm afraid I've never needed to strip down a cleaner to this extent until now. I've removed the motor and washed it's foam shroud but could you tell me how to remove the rear wheels and motor housing please so that I have better access? I don't want to guess in case I end up snapping something!
Hopefully when I've stripped it down a bit more I'll be able to squash and twist the motor down while sliding the clear plastic retaining bracket into its slots! That seems like quite a conjuring trick to me so if you have any other handy hints they'd be most welcome.

As I recall removing the wheels is not necessary. Take a look here: Dyson DC02 Cable Repair/Replacement, that guide shows you how to strip down a DC02 in detail.

You will also need to grind a little bit from the clear plastic motor retainer so it fits over the thermal cut out.

Thanks once more for your very helpful advice. It's much easier to strip down a DC02 if it's done in the correct order!.
That thermal cut out really is in an awkward place, I ground more and more off the motor retainer and never managed to make it sit absolutely flat across the motor - but it's reassembled and running now so hopefully my third hand, twenty year old Dyson will just keep on going!
