Are HEPA filters washable?
« on: July 06, 2013, 10:12:13 pm »
I have a number of machines, as I have a cleaning company abroad, and use DC14's, DC41's and DC33's.

These models all have two filters, but the HEPA ones are more than a little confusing, as some sources say they can be washed, others say they cannot.  I see that the HEPA's seem to be made of paper in the DC41, for example, so could you please explain to me what I should and should not do with these particular ones?  I cannot see with the material they are made of that they are "filters for life" in these models.  I would welcome your thoughts!  Thanks and best wishes, Martin

Some later model HEPAs are washable - within reason.

Early ones are not.

So your DC14 one certainly isn't.

On certain later models where they can be washed a few times, there are usually stickers close to the filter on the machine indicating that.

Does anyone here have a DC41 handy to tell the chap what it says on there?

Thanks for reply.  A DC33 I have does say it can be washed up to 10 times every 3 months, indicating 2.5 years of life from the HEPA.  So, this is at least better than many others.

I was aware that the HEPA filters on the DC14 are simple replaced, but these seem to be a more popular machine than the DC33, perhaps as they are older and more reliable, and the newer DC33 has changed diameter of the wand, and older fitments no longer attach.   Whatever, thanks for the reply, and yes, advice on the DC41 would be welcome, as it seems to me like a card "comb", and I do not think that lends itself to washing quite so easily!

Yes, they are the folded card type on the 41.

You might get away with washing them once or twice, but I agree they wouldn't take much.

They are not cheap either!  :o

I almost feel that the best bet for Dyson is a DC14.  Still has great suction, HEPA replacements are much cheaper, compared to the DC41 and DC33
and all parts still available.  Perhaps I should sell the DC41's on, as well as my DC15.  Seems all balls to me! :)

Is the follded card comb inside the filters for 04's,07's and 14s the reason you shouldn't wash them or is it something else? If they are completely dried out are they ok to use? By the way I always put brand new HEPAs in the dysons I flog before anybody asks!

I think its basically that, and the carbon stuff that is in some of them doesn't like water.
