I picked up a non-working Dyson DC16 at a thrift store for 15 bucks 

It runs for 1 second and then the red led light flashes and it cuts off... I've taken it apart and cleaned it completely and removed the hall-effect device and permanently bridged the device so the unit thinks the filter is fitted, even if it's not... I thought that this would resolve the issue, but it didn't... I ordered a new battery and it will be here in two days.

I was messing with it and discovered that if I cover the brush end with my hand the vacuum works fine, it's only when I remove my hand that it cuts off... has anybody ever seen anything like that? Any ideas?  It's like it requires constant pressure to stay on.

How did you get on with this? As per my thread, I have the same issues, although not quite as bad as yours. Did you ever get a new battery and did it solve it?

New battery fixed mine good as new... I found one on Amazon for 13$. Good luck
