Title: Is it possible to take apart the cyclone cylinder?
Post by: hsantho on October 28, 2011, 02:26:37 pm
Can the cylinder including the fins be removed and this whole thing be taken apart for a total clean?
One video I watched showed that the fins can be removed by gently pulling. I have not been successful at doing that and I do not want to break this piece. I can still see dirt inside of the cylinder if I look down the holes. And then there are the little holes around the cylinder. I want to see what is in there! Can anyone help? Thanks much, Helen

Welcome to the site hsantho.  :tiphat:

The fins will come off but you have to pull them very hard.

Start by taking the top off like so:

Then the fins come off like so:

Then the final bit comes off like so - also very hard to pull.

That's what we do to clean them. Someone we know is going to publish a full workshop manual on the DC07 in the next few weeks. We have helped out with a few pictures for it, three of which you see above. Watch this space; we will be stocking it too.  :icon_nod:

Do ask if there is anything else you need. Don't forget to >>vote in our poll while you are on the site<< (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,31).

As this topic was linked today, I thought I may wake it up.

The DC07 workshop manual mentioned we now sell here (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/Dyson/DC07-service-manual).

Americans and Australians can also get it from here (http://dysonworkshopmanuals.com/), but be sure to select USA & World Shipping there. It will not ship if you select UK.

Americans can also get it from Amazon here (http://www.amazon.com/Unofficial-Dyson-DC07-Workshop-Manual/dp/0955687411/?tag=r0be2e-20).

The rest of the assembly is gued together isnt it? The 3 screws inside the cyclone do nothing when removed apart from being a nice source of screws to replace any rusty on view ones...

Hi, is this also how you replace the handle assembly? I have the three screws off the top however the cover is difficult to take off. I have the replacement dirt housing top. thanks.

To replace the top handle...

Take the clear bin off the bottom.
Remove the 3 screws and pull the handle off. It will be stiff as the seal holds it in.

Swap the bin flap rod over if you didn't get one with the new handle. 1 torx screw and it comes off
Make sure the new handle has a seal on, if not swap your old one on.
Replace the handle and rod, making sure the rod goes into the catch at the bottom. I find pulling the release trigger so the rod extends and then fiddling it into the bottom catch is the best method. It's a bit fiddly, and you need to make sure the top handle is straight
Replace the screws
Check the catch works before putting the bin and bottom flap on as its a pain to get on if not!

Hope this helps

Thanks much. I'll give it a try and report back so others will be confident of doing. Have already replaced the wand clicker a few years back.

Good luck! Once you you into it it's pretty straight forward. I find a light smear of oil helps the top seal goback on, it canpull itself outas you push it home.

Whilst you have it stripped down, some high pressure water through the cyclones then a night in the airing cupboard would help it alot! Youll see what I mean when you take it apart!

Anyone with  answers to this? I don't suppose the screws are just for decoration, so any tips on how to further take the cyclone apart once the three inner screws are removed? And yes, the fins, grill and handle are all removed.

Having seen pictures of one physically cut in half (on here I think) the dc07 ones are glued/bonded.

The screws make an excellent source to replace a rusty visible one when refurbing a machine!

Interesting. Although the newer machines, with the superfluous amount of pieces to the cyclones, take much longer to disassemble, at least one IS able to completely disassemble. Makes for much quicker drying times and no question as to whether or not moisture is trapped inside. The only thing worse than a vacuum that smells like dogs is a vacuum that smells like sweaty shoes.

Yes, every model bar the 07 can be fully stripped, and is easier than it looks, and as you say infinatly more easy to wash and dry!

The steps are above, the cyclone doesn't split further sadly. A good soak then rinse see's them right!

So basically these 3 steps should let me clean my cyclone and hopefully get rid of awful smell?
How long do you think guys it would need to dry? A week?
So I need T15 screwdriver?

Although this is a very old post, the subject matter is still very much in the zone where strip downs and refurbishment of difficult to access dirty filthy places are concerned.

I note that MV gives an instant reply and a few pics and gives the impression that the process is doable, needing very strong hands, and that they do it all the time on their refurbished DC07 machines. I really would like to see a You tube video from MV showing in great detail the full process of getting those fins off.

I have searched and searched and have only found ONE video by a young Irishman who did this video in a really thorough manner in his own way by trial and error, and was obviously his first attempt.
Name: Bootsowen.
Title: Dyson DC07 Cleaning the vortex cyclone and canister.

I congratulate him on his achievement and getting the job done WITHOUT ANY DAMAGE.
I followed the video piece by piece over and over, decided to have a go and FAILED MISERABLY. I could not budge those fins, even by using bull nose pliers and even a pair of mole grips.

My DC07 was a breaker so I was not too bothered, I just wanted the practice. I took the rubber bottom seal out as he did, thinking it would make it easier. Not so, I ended up doing damage to the rubber flap that has to be pushed out. I was harsh with it.

Finding out that the fins would still not give at all, I gave up to find that I could not get the rubber seal back in and did further damage to the seal. Solution to get it back together was to trim off part of the seal and glue it into place with my fish tank sealer. Ended up with just a thorough hot wash inside with fairy liquid and a really thorough dry out.

My conclusion is this:- There is a very good reason why there is only ONE SUCCESSFUL video out there, it is very difficult to do, so other you tubers are not doing it - far too risky. You may be lucky and get it done, you may try and fail, but if you fail and get it wrong and do damage it will cost you dearly for a replacement unit.

I could be wrong but if anyone tells you they do it on a regular basis, no problem, I would (to be kind) say take that with a pinch of salt.

I await a flood of links showing this procedure being carried out. I would love to be proved wrong on this as I would like to be able to do this seemingly impossible task just for the heck of it, and to say I have done that job, it's not so bad.

Catch you later when you are all of sound mind again after the heavy drinking session.
