Title: Electrolux Z4460 4x4 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on September 16, 2019, 09:43:45 pm
The Electrolux 4x4 is a very rare vacuum cleaner. Born in the early 1990s as the top of the line cylinder cleaner, it did not sell well. I've never really seen one in real life...

So, naturally, I found myself with 2 of them!

As you do. So, with a bit of tape on each to know which was which

[attachimg=1]

We will concentrate on just one machine, although as usual all the best parts went into one, and the rest into the other.

[attachimg=2]

Pop the tool door latch

[attachimg=3]

Which is held on with two screws either side

[attachimg=4]

And can then be removed

[attachimg=5]

Made in the UK

[attachimg=6]

Tools out now

[attachimg=7]

At the time I was missing the dusting brush

[attachimg=8]

Then the post motor filter cage comes off

[attachimg=9]

Then the filter itself

[attachimg=1]

Revealing that all was not too grubby

[attachimg=2]

The bag door can be removed now by just pulling up and forwards and sliding the rails out

[attachimg=3]

Which then just fall off

[attachimg=4]

The bag compartment seal pulls off the underside of the lid

[attachimg=5]

Inside the bag compartment we find this incorrect bag...

[attachimg=6]

And 2 filters, which it is supposed to have as standard

[attachimg=7]

Something has exploded somewhere along its history...

[attachimg=8]

And it generally looks like a Dyson does after 43 seconds of use

[attachimg=9]

Next out is the bag holder itself

[attachimg=1]

Next, we can flip it over and remove the 4 screws

[attachimg=2]

And take the top shell off

[attachimg=3]

Time to strip the top shell

[attachimg=4]

On/Off switch out

[attachimg=5]

[attachimg=6]

Then the control panel display cover unclips

[attachimg=7]

The foam serving as to stop light bleed

[attachimg=8]

The rubber parking grip pushes though too which will aid polishing

[attachimg=9]

Now we can start unplugging things

[attachimg=1]

And mark some of the pipes up just in case

[attachimg=2]

These two help run the auto power setting

[attachimg=3]

And pull out easily

[attachimg=4]

This short one runs to the bag compartment to work the bag full light (this works on general air pressure rather than anything fancy, as I found out after using it to unclog a DC07 cyclone and killing the paper bag so much it came on and knocked the vac into low power to boot)

[attachimg=5]

This black rubber hose runs off somewhere too

[attachimg=6]

Seemingly to provide a tiny air feed to keep whatever is under this cover cool

[attachimg=7]

Sit rep of the wires

[attachimg=8]

[attachimg=9]

And they can be removed. The three I am holding come from the motor, the two black from  the cord reel

[attachimg=1]

The brains can be lifted out now

[attachimg=2]

mmmm early 90s PCB

[attachimg=3]

Onto the cord reel now, and fun fact, this is the same cord rewind assembly as the Dolphin, but with the brake part removed...

[attachimg=4]

It turns out the cord reel was not next out, as can be seen by the next image being of the ratings plate

[attachimg=5]

Followed by the removal of the hose inlet part

[attachimg=6]

Turns out those plastic pipes just fall out when removed

[attachimg=7]

Leaving a little hole

[attachimg=8]

Now we can remove the motor cover

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Electrolux Z4460 4x4 - Stripdown and Refurb

Followed by another rubber seal

[attachimg=1]

Now we can lift the cord reel out

[attachimg=2]

And do battle with these  :censored: :censored:which hold the motor inner cover on, and their a right bastard to undo

[attachimg=3]

And then there were still a couple of screws!  :biglaugh:

[attachimg=4]

And voila, motor out

[attachimg=5]

The rest of the internal air conditioning system comes out now, the pipe just goes into where the exhaust air of the motor is, infact thinking about it might be the overheat sensor, when the air through the pipe gets too hot it cuts the machine off...

[attachimg=6]

Here we can see the hinges for the underside compartment

[attachimg=7]

Which is used for holding spare bags, spare filters, drugs or pizza I guess

[attachimg=8]

Then, all the wheels came off

[attachimg=9]

This machine has been fettled before, I see glue on the bumper...

[attachimg=1]

[attachimg=2]

Off it came anyway! And we can extract the motor, starting with the rubber seal

[attachimg=3]

[attachimg=4]

Then the motor lifts out of another housing, no wonder this thing is quite quiet in use...

[attachimg=5]

Big rubber holder at the back

[attachimg=6]

The back of the fancase has this foam gasket

[attachimg=7]

I also noticed this... one of the coil wires is cut, but the motor still runs perfectly...

[attachimg=8]

Either way, not alot needs to be done to this motor, which is a dolphin one, in itself a version of the twin turbo motor, basically ancient but still plodding along at this point in time

[attachimg=9]

At this point, one machine was done.

[attachimg=1]

So I did the other one. And the things of note were:

It has its ducting brush, which was full of fluff, this was just a little bit

[attachimg=2]

And only 2 wires going to the motor

[attachimg=3]

One of which has seen crimp action before

[attachimg=4]

twice

[attachimg=5]

The other motor is removed and is completely different again!

[attachimg=6]

Either way, it's onto the tools, and there is only one set of these... Hose has a rubber seal to come off its end

[attachimg=7]

Then we can move up to the control panel

[attachimg=8]

Which pops right out

[attachimg=9]

The two AAA batteries were crap

[attachimg=1]

Opened!

[attachimg=2]

[attachimg=3]

Empty

[attachimg=4]

Made a note of where this thread goes, its for the control panel securing screw

[attachimg=5]

Broken post on the handle assembly too

[attachimg=6]

Hose end separated a bit more

[attachimg=7]

With another seal

[attachimg=8]

Wands now! The parking bracket slides right off

[attachimg=9]

Then the outer button pops off

[attachimg=1]

Then, by bending the locking tab out (which cracked the paint right up) the two halves pull apart

[attachimg=2]

This plastic bush comes out of this part, it rides up and down the inside of the other half

[attachimg=3]

The actual locking part can slide off now, once the metal pin is removed

[attachimg=4]

Then one last sealing bush

[attachimg=5]

Floor head now!

[attachimg=6]

Fancy anti mark anti noise wheels there

[attachimg=7]

Which all pop out

[attachimg=8]

They were quite grubby

[attachimg=9]

Inside the suction path was a bit grubby too...

[attachimg=1]

The top cap pops off now

[attachimg=2]

Then with swearing and some big plastic locking tabs the two halves can be seperated

[attachimg=3]

The rubber blades push out from behind

[attachimg=4]

Rear wheels pop out of the housing

[attachimg=5]

And then it really was all apart!

[attachimg=6]

Some washing and machine polishing occured

[attachimg=7]

[attachimg=8]

[attachimg=9]

And voila, one exploded diagram

[attachimg=1]

Floorhead first

[attachimg=2]

Wheels went on with a lick of grease

[attachimg=3]

Nice and clean ready for the rubber strips

[attachimg=4]

Snapped together

[attachimg=5]

I don't recommend dismantling these floor tools unless you have to (DC02 ones are the same), you do damage it a bit

[attachimg=6]

But then it's not exactly immaculate anyway!

[attachimg=7]

Comes up alright though

[attachimg=8]

Blockage gone!

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Electrolux Z4460 4x4 - Stripdown and Refurb

And clicked together

[attachimg=1]

The felt wheel inserts perked up with a good scrubbing, it's silent now on the laminate!

[attachimg=2]

And fitted

[attachimg=3]

Wands next

[attachimg=4]

The plastic inserts cleaned up nicely

[attachimg=5]

[attachimg=6]

Locking collar slid on

[attachimg=7]

Locking pin replaced, with a tiny dab of grease, not much though or itll go on the wand

[attachimg=8]

Release peg and its spring are fitted, again a swipe of oil on the moving surfaces

[attachimg=9]

Push, bend, slip, swear, bend again, crack paint...

[attachimg=1]

Then hide it all and pretend it never happened with the cover!

[attachimg=2]

Useless parking bracket fitted

[attachimg=3]

Hose now! Seal 1 on

[attachimg=4]

Seal 2 and the start of the user end fitted

[attachimg=5]

Broken screw peg glued back in

[attachimg=6]

Remote assembled

[attachimg=7]

[attachimg=8]

And fresh batteries fitted

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Electrolux Z4460 4x4 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on September 16, 2019, 10:59:07 pm
One side of the flimsy crap hand grip on!

[attachimg=1]

Other side of the flimsy crap hand grip on, and the post cracked again so i just screwed the post onto the screw, then glued the post to the other side

[attachimg=2]

Remote fitted

[attachimg=3]

I'm sat here writing this now, remembering that my phone has an IR blaster in... I feel a plan forming!

Motor now, and I did nothing to these, so the foam gasket goes on first

[attachimg=4]

Then the bottom holder

[attachimg=5]

Then the first cover goes on

[attachimg=6]

Then falls off again so fit the inner to the second layer then slide the motor in...

[attachimg=7]

The other motor, so as not to feel left out looks like this

[attachimg=8]

The furniture guard slides back on now and oh my god what an arse this is! You have to slide the whole thing on, mm by mm. WD40 speeds it up alot though...

[attachimg=9]

Eventually done

[attachimg=1]

Wheels back on with some oil, one of these crabbed sideways

[attachimg=2]

One still does, but at least I tried

[attachimg=3]

Cubby hole cover clipped on

[attachimg=4]

Motor and cord rewind dropped in

[attachimg=5]

Motor housing top gasket fitted

[attachimg=6]

PCB is fitted next, and I ran the hose port and it's 2 tubes as well

[attachimg=7]

Piped up

[attachimg=8]

[attachimg=9]

Hole

[attachimg=1]

No hole

[attachimg=2]

Utterly brilliantly, the trim piece was printed from the back, so I could get the top surface really polished! This is the 2nd best one, could not get those 2 deep scratches out

[attachimg=3]

Power button fitted

[attachimg=4]

And the top shell can be lowered on and screwed up

[attachimg=5]

I refitted one filter, I find two restricts the airflow a bit, or at least it does on Dolphins

[attachimg=6]

Bag holder fitted

[attachimg=7]

Bag compartment lid sealed

[attachimg=8]

And fitted to the machine

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Electrolux Z4460 4x4 - Stripdown and Refurb

[attachimg=1]

Tooled up

[attachimg=2]

No filters fitted for now, so cage top on

[attachimg=3]

And with that, the 2nd best one was together and ready for finishing!

[attachimg=4]

[attachimg=5]

[attachimg=6]

I then put the best one together!

[attachimg=7]

[attachimg=8]

I got the makeup out and had some tea

[attachimg=9]

Then they were done

[attachimg=1]

[attachimg=2]

[attachimg=3]

[attachimg=4]

[attachimg=5]

[attachimg=6]

Fun fact, they are 2 different shades! As I found out when I went to fit the body panels and put the wrong tool door on the wrong shell

[attachimg=7]

[attachimg=8]

And  I even used it as Vacuum of the Month 2019, where I discovered a few flaws...

But, I am ever so pleased to have one! They are lovely, and it will have a place in my collection for a while to come!

Thanks for reading

Both belonged to another collector. One he paid a couple of hundred quid for, the other he found on facebook for £30 a few months later (as you do)

One stank of air freshener and the other does jump about a tiny bit when you change the power, so the job paid for itself and he got possibly the mintiest one there is ever, and ive got the 2nd!

Their ruddy clunky to use though, the floor tool is horrible and infared has no place on a vac.

Having used a Dolphin and this for a month, I'd choose the dolphin every day.
Still love it though...
