A few years ago now, I joined a facebook group for Bellringers and vacuum cleaners found in churches... Bizarre but nirvana for vacuum nerds like us! Some time passed but one day I saw a post that caught my eye somewhat more than usual

It had been found in a long forgotten crawl space, good memories and knowledge reckon 30/35 years... I got chatting to the guy who posted the pictures and would you look what happened...
It's utterly fabulous, I've never seen one so terrible.

Let's see if we can put it right.

A donor machine was obtained just in case, and a nice set of tools as a surprise for the church (ideal for cleaning pews is a cloth hosed 119...)

Unless specified though, not much was used. We concentrate on the Heywood one here

Bag slide off

The original cloth inner (stops it over-stretching) was perished so was removed

And the spring removed from the slide

The bag was then turned inside out and the string dug out

Cut

And removed from the bag flange
[attachimg=8]
The bag was then put into soak number 1 for a few hours, where it immediately went death dark black...Nice :thumbsup:

The cable can be unwound from the handle

And removed from the beautiful vintage plug

Probably the original fuse

Time to split the handle

The handle grip wasn't too hard to get off...

Then the bottom bolt can be removed

The rubber boot at the end of the lower handle slid off without too much of a fight

And with that done, the handle is off, and we can start at the front with the belt guard

Then get the brushroll out

Take an end cap off
[attachimg=5]
Then tap the other end through
[attachimg=6]
This free's up alot of stuck compacted ancient dust

The brush strips didn't come out too badly once scraped free of their carpet fluff, and their Genuine Hoover too

Better-than-this brush strips are becoming VERY uncommon now so these stayed

Underneath now, to the bottom cover

Not too bad in here

Remove the bottom cover rear retaining bracket
[attachimg=4]
Pop the cable clips off the yolk
[attachimg=5]

Then with the cable unwired from the machine it is free! I pulled the cable from the outer protective sheath and binned the cable. It was very perishing.

Next, came 4 screws

And we can get the chassis split

Furniture guard next, in surprisingly good order considering

Front wheel axle circlips were dug out and spun round to be hooked off

Then the front wheels were removed

The 2nd side proved more of a struggle

Luckily the hammer helped tap the seized axle out of the chassis

The belt guard spring can be unlatched

and removed
[attachimg=8]
With that the front chassis is empty

We can move onto the back

non spring side handle bail bolt removed first
[attachimg=2]
Lifted

Other side
[attachimg=4]
Untension the spring and remove the handle bail

Remembering to remove the retaining peg, tap the shaft out of the cleaner gently as it goes through the Bakelite

The hole is bigger now

Time for the switch now

(HATE these) Pop the retaining tab out of the top and remove
[attachimg=9]

A 10mm deep socket or just long pliers remove the nut holding the switch down

Original switch (or AN original switch...)

The bracket for the pedal lifts out now

Time to remove the carbon brushes now... Side one

Phew
[attachimg=5]
Side 2... ah, not so good...

We'll sort that later, onto the motor now, undo the fancase screws

And withdraw the armature

Take the belt spindle and fan off to remove the armature from the front bearing and HELLO ancient holy dust!

Armature looks in good order

The 3 screws holding the coil in are removed and the coil lifts out.

We can get at the carbon brush too and the end of it had been trapped in the cover, so it pulled out badly, but I have spare springs, so that's OK

The coil is held to it's bracket by a shallow screw
[attachimg=5]
, then lots of small tapping
[attachimg=6]
The coil sits against indents in the metal shell so never fuses together with a really tight friction fit lucklily

Back there is not nice! Remove the screws holding the carbon brush holders in
[attachimg=8]
They pull out
[attachimg=9]

Had I known the end cap of the carbon holder would come apart quite so easily id have not pulled at the brush from inside earlier, but hey ho!

The back bearing can be unscrewed now

Then onto underneath and the back wheels
[attachimg=3]

The rear wheels are held on with this little circlip

And with that, it is apart! Washables

And rubbish

The bag did this 3/4 more times

Before coming up nice and clear again! I also removed the broken brushroll bearing from the end cap the outer shell was stuck in

Cleaned up the coil

Cleaned up the bodywork to be painted (this was done in tandem with the other one as it was all going the same colour)

Then painted!

The paint on the chassis was too far gone, too pitted from corrosion, so...

A better handle grip was obtained too (modern Hoover one but Brown, so that's OK!)

Which came from a 1346 handle I think, and bar some bits riveted on differently the handle itself didn't change from at least the 50's to the 60's! (in reality the 40's to the 80's...)

I bopped the bag back together very quickly once the paint had dried as it was easier to store

Then, after everything else had been polished, we have the laid out shot

And the brushroll can go back together with new bearings (crikey that box is ALOT emptier now...)

We needed one new slack washer as well, one was cracked. Luckily I have some spares

(and about a billion used perfectly good ones too but who doesn't like NOS parts!
The brushroll then went back together

The rear bearing can go back into place

Then the carbon holders, which polished up very nicely

The coil can go back into its holder

Then fitted to the cleaner, and the carbon brush wires clipped onto the holders

Then the fan

And finally the belt spindle. Tighten it all up really well

Fit the armature back into place, screw the housing up then refit the seal (which cleaned up REALLY nicely!)

I've skipped ahead here (this was years ago now!) and seem to have assembled the entire handle bail in 1 shot so refer to the other 119 threads for that nugget if you need, but shiny...

I got the SUPER IMPORTANT AND DIFFICULT belt guard spring refitting though, don't worry...

Front wheels can go back on now

Then we can marry the two parts together again

One end of a new drum of twin core black flex was run through the outer sheath and fitted, safety first especially as this 119 wont be sitting in a glass cabinet, it'll (hopefully) be used by many people.

The bottom cover can go back on now

Then a belt

Then the belt cover (which is not the same one as came off it, I found a better one, although still not fab)

The remains of the rubber handle bit went back on nicely and lined up as it should

I then fitted the handle together, and wound on a nice amount of flex, then cut it and found the plug

The Volex came out mint!

I fibbed on the bag earlier, I've just come across the photo's! I did fit the bag lower down to the holder to get past this hole, the only bit of damage on the whole bag

Hence it sits slightly lower here

And is a tad tighter here...

But NO FEAR, because I fitted the patented Beko Hepaflo mod using a Dyson lower hose, a Sebo bag with the top chopped off, electrical tape and a cable tie

Hopefully now if they have been using it, changing the bag wont be so awful to do!

Probably one of the worst condition ones I've done, but it shows that these 119's do come up well with minimal effort and a bit of paint! The church were thrilled too, the chap was ever so happy when he unboxed it looking quite different to before!

Yes, Manchester Heywood! Your 119 should have the same mod iirc, sure I was doing it back then!

Would you say these 119s are worth doing up?
I got one knocking about i bought a good few years ago now, not really bothered to do it up, the furthest I got was removing the motor as it has noisy bearings, ever since its sat in me loft.
Not sure if its worth attemping to round up the bits, do it up and flog it, give it to someone to restore themselves or whatever or just get shut of it as it is
