Dyson vacuum cleaner model numbers can be a confusing array of numbers and letters.
We publish this Dyson model range glossary in order that the Dyson vacuum cleaner model codes might be demystified somewhat.
The first Dysons: The Kleeneze Rotork Cyclon and the Apex G-Force.
To the untrained eye, the Rotork Cyclon and the G-Force are one and the same.

The first vacuum cleaner by James Dyson was called the Kleeneze Rotork Cyclon; the first production vacuum cleaner created by James Dyson.
It was not sold under the Dyson name.
They were sold through Kleeneze’s distribution network and at the Ideal Home Exhibition through 1983 & 1984.
These (and the visually similar later Japanese G-Force machines - see below) are usually regarded as prototype Dysons, and are VERY rare. Very seldom do they come up for sale.
Around 550 Rotorks were made, for the UK market only. Nowadays they are very rare. Dyson Malmesbury has one. The Zanussi museum in Italy has one (Zanussi built them). The design museum in London has one. The Frenchay museum in Bristol has one. One of the spare parts distributors we deal with has one. A member here called Heidi has one. A shop called Killis in Sheffield has one. A couple of guys in the US and a collector in the UK we know of also have one. There may be a few more out there.
We guestimate there are perhaps 20-30 in total remain worldwide. All in the hands of collectors, enthusiasts and museums, so very few people have seen one of these as this machine is a piece of Dyson history.
Interest in this initial model lead to licensing agreements in Japan where a slightly modified version of the “Cyclon” was sold by Apex inc. as the “G-Force”.
The Dyson G Force

The G Force was the very first Dyson that Dyson really admitted to (they never talk much about the Rotork above). It was only sold to the Japanese market. It cost around $2000 in 1991 and won a design award.

It also was not sold under the Dyson name. James Dyson later used the money he earned from the G-Force to start up the UK Dyson company we all know.
James Dyson eventually licensed his design in Japan, the home of high-tech (like taking coals to Newcastle, no?). The Japanese loved the over-priced pink G-Force and, in 1993, the royalties allowed James to manufacture a Dyson machine under his own name, the DC01 was born. A multi-millionaire and world-wide success story was also born!

The Dyson DA001 and DC01.
The first vacuum cleaner sold under the Dyson name was the DA001, launched in 1993. It was a domestic upright model that used the patented "Dual Cyclone" technology and was mostly made in Chippenham (although some very early ones are badged as being made in Bath (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,2676.msg20490.html#msg20490)). After a short period, it was renamed the DC01 and production later moved to Malmesbury, at the company's new factory/research centre (now only an R&D centre since production moved abroad).
The DA001/DC01 had a single motor (two variants were used: YDK and Ametek) which provided the suction and also drove the brushroll directly via a single rubber toothless belt, so was mainly designed to use on carpeted floors. It stored its hose on the back of the housing as part of the handle wand, and removing the handle wand enabled this stretch hose to be used. Dyson has retained this basic idea on their upright models to date.
This was the only Dyson upright before Cinetic machines not to use washable pre-motor filters; the filters had to be purchased and replaced every 3 months (washable ones were later sold though). It also had a choice of post motor filtration – standard or HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arrest) according to the model purchased.

They are becoming a bit retro now. Typically grey/yellow, occasionally grey/blue and on rare occasions available in the red, purple and yellow "De Stijl" colours you see above in the centre. They are not as sophisticated as later models, but they are built like a tank and last for years. They sold very well in Scotland as the Scottish Electricity Board sold them. Many are still in daily use, not only in Scotland, but all over the world today. They were never sold in the USA, but collectors have since imported some to there.
There are slight differences between standard DC01's and the early DA001 machines:
- All DA001s are yellow and grey (no grey/blue or yellow/purple/red De Stijl made yet)
- The cleaner head and front bumper differs a little in design - one doesn't easily fit the other
- Original back hoses on the DA001 were about an inch shorter (but after-market ones fit either)
- Wands on the DA001 had a white plastic collar on the end of the aluminium tube and were a tad shorter on the tube (hence the shorter hose)
- The DA001 had a fixed soleplate and most DC01s had a revised version with a tilting cradle within the soleplate (a better explanation of that >>here<< (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,5.0.html).)
The DA001 and DC01 are essentially the same machine, the DC01 is basically a facelift of the DA001. Most parts are interchangeable, most new after-market parts fit both variants (but after-market bumpers do not fit DA001's), but if sourcing original used soleplates, cleaner heads, bottom motor housings, hoses or a wand, better to ask the question here to see if what you intend to buy will fit, or take pot luck. Because chances are the seller (unless a Dyson guru like some folk here) won't have a clue and you will be left wondering why the £5 used hose from eBay wont fit your DC01/DA001.

The Dyson DC02
The DC02 was the first cylinder (canister) model sold by Dyson. It was smaller and easier to carry than the preceding DC01. Its shape allowed it to sit on stairs and this design was named "stair-hugging" by Dyson. The cleaner features an extendable hose designed to work around corners and objects. To the rear of the machine, there is a pedal which retracts the cable back into the cleaner.

The Dyson DC02 Recyclone
It uses the cyclone system. This model is commonly duplicated by other manufacturers, presumably because the more complicated Dyson models (Root cyclone models etc.) have better protected patents.
Typically grey with yellow fittings, some were made in white with blue fittings and a few other rarer variants existed - see below.

The model is also available in a special edition called the 'DC02 Recyclone' (see above), named such because it was the first vacuum cleaner to be made out of recycled plastic.

The Dyson DC03

The DC03 was a lightweight, low profile upright cleaner. The only Dyson able to recline absolutely flat to go under furniture (as machines like Sebo (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,2161.0.html) do) They are twin cylinder machines that contain one normal cylinder and a second which contained a pair of HEPA filters.
Its suction power was much lower than other Dyson uprights due to the very small motor and narrow cyclone fitted. Their heavy-duty filtration system allowed it to survive for many years after the rest of the original Cyclone cleaners were discontinued.

Most models were grey in colour with yellow and/or yellow and purple fittings.
They were the first slim Dyson. They only weigh about 15 pounds and when reclined. Being able to be folded flat allows them to be stored on two hooks, hung on the back of a door.
The downsides are that the filters are often not washable (some later ones are), the dust collection cylinder isn't big, and the motor (and thus the suction) is less powerful than other Dysons (although adequate for most people).

Despite the fact that these machines did not have blistering performance, they were a stylish machine and still have a small but enthusiastic following.

The Dyson DC04
The DC04 was the successor to the DC01 above. These models are one of the all-time best-sellers for Dyson - with good reason.

The DC04 was the successor to the original DC01. It had improved washable filters fitted as standard. Whilst the design is quite similar to the earlier DC01, they corrected a few minor design flaws. The DC04 is what we call the "Ford Transit" of Dysons - it does exactly what you want it to do without fuss. A DC04 is easier to empty, easier to use with the tools, the tools are stored on-board in a more sensible way, and it is just a nicer machine to use than the earlier models. We used to sell a lot of DC04's.

The Dyson DC05
The DC05 was the second cylinder model. It was designed as a replacement model for the DC02 (which had not been too popular) and had improved design features.
The lilac 'Motorhead' version was the first Dyson to offer a powernozzle - a floor nozzle with a motor-powered brush-roll for improved performance on carpets. Most DC05s were standard as the one in the photo here is.

The Dyson DC06

Dyson's first robotic vacuum cleaner, equipped with the Dyson Digital Motor, had managed to appear at the Ideal Home Exhibition and other shows during 2000 and 2001 but had not proceeded beyond the home-trial stage by 2012, as cost and weight needed reducing. It had the ability to 'learn' the room, and to distinguish between solid objects, such as walls and furniture, and human beings, pets, etc. by utilising sensors and specially-written navigation software.

Dyson DC06 was never properly launched so they were never generally available. However, some test units, prototypes and pre-production models were made so a few are out there; mostly in the hands of Dyson and a few collectors.

The DC06 was Dyson's only foray into robotic vacuums until the launch of the 360 Eye.

Another reason they were never generally sold is the price would have been circa £1800. A lot of money in the early naughties.

The Dyson DC07
The DC07, Dyson's fourth upright vacuum cleaner produced under the Dyson name was released in the early 2000s, is given the slogan 'the original root cyclone upright'. This is appropriate because this was the first implementation of Root Cyclone technology into a vacuum cleaner. Many people were confused if this technology was any different from the previous Dual Cyclone technology (slightly better suction actually).

The model is very similar in features to the DC04 - but a bit more sleek. They are available in a wide variety of colours and are a great value reconditioned buy. Dyson took everything they had learned with the DC01 and DC04 and improved it to make the DC07.

The DC07 was very popular with DIY repairers, and that popularity lead to the Unofficial Dyson DC07 Workshop Manual (http://hhttps://shop.manchestervacs.co.uk/dyson-upright-vacuum-cleaner-spares/dc07-spares/dc07-service-manual) being written.

There are fifteen UK models of Dyson DC07, and a few other variants supplied to other countries around the world. This is not as confusing as it may seem at first glance. The variations mostly comprise which extra tools and accessories were supplied with the machines originally, which filters they were fitted with, the colour of the unit, and if the model is clutched (a brush control mechanism operated by a clutch allowing the brush roll to be switched off) or not.
Here is a list of the UK market models with colour variants:

• DC07 Precision. Silver/Black.

Spare parts are abundant for these machines, as anything not available from Dyson has been made after-market already or is plentiful used. The Dyson DC08
The DC08 was cylinder (canister) machine released around 2002, incorporating the Dyson Root Cyclone technology found on the DC07. The DC08 was the replacement for the DC05. It was the first of the Dyson cylinder models to feature the new "Animal" derivative first seen on the DC07, which was claimed to mean that the cleaner was capable of dealing effectively with pet hair and dander. Animal models came with an air driven turbine floorhead and mini turbo brush for effective pet hair removal on carpets and furnishings – they also came equipped with HEPA post-motor filters.

None of the DC08 models had electric motorised floorheads. Like the DC07, the DC08 was fitted with an uprated motor giving it more suction power, handled by the new root 12 cyclone system the DC08 was equipped with. This higher power output was able to drive the main turbo floorhead without the need for a second electric motor and the extra wiring that the DC05 motorhead had.

Basic models in the DC08 range did not come with the turbine floorhead, having only the standard floor heads which were better suited to hard flooring than carpets. Unlike the DC02, the DC08 did not have storage for its small tools in the body of the cleaner. As with the DC05, tools were stored on a small caddy attached to the suction hose. The DC08 had a long production run; it was upgraded to the DC08 Telescope wrap after the launch of the DC11, to enable it to be stored more efficiently, and was eventually superseded by the DC19.
We urge spare parts buyers to exercise great caution when buying any tool or cleaner head for these models as Dyson did a lot of playing around with different tool sockets and fittings at this time. Many otherwise seemingly identical machines can have differing tool sockets, and many people make mistakes when buying spare parts that involve a tool or tool/hose socket fitting.

The Dyson DC09
Dyson never made a DC09. Reputedly, as the numbers are associated with the DC-9 aircraft produced by McDonnell Douglas.

The Dyson DC11
The DC11 was the first Dyson cylinder cleaner with Telescope wrap. Launched around 2003. It had two separate dust bins and cyclone assemblies to make the machine smaller when it was packed away.

The Dyson DC12 and DC12 Plus

The DC12/DC12 Plus are small cylinder machines that were released exclusively in Japan. Launched in June 2003.
The digital motor fitted on these machines are about half the size and weight of conventional motors but with 50% more power.

The DC12 cost around $650 when new, and was small enough to fit inside a cube measuring 8 inches by 10 inches by 12 inches.

Dyson never made a DC13. Reputedly, this was due to superstitious reasons surrounding the number thirteen. :underchair:

The Dyson DC14
In our opinion, one of Dyson's greatest ever machines. Many people regard the DC14 as the last of the "proper" Dysons; before built-in obsolescence, lower build quality and re-inventing the wheel each year with untested, unreliable, unnecessary and overly-complex engineering happened.

The DC14 was released in 2004. It is a revision of an upright vacuum cleaner with lower centre of gravity and a similar back hose to previous upright machines. The DC14 vacuum cleaner uses Dyson's "Root 8" cyclone technology, which maintains constant suction they say. The Root 8 cyclone technology on the DC14 was improved since the DC07. The DC14 comes in four variants, the standard DC14, the All Floors, the Allergy and the Animal. More of the DC14 units sold than the later DC15 Ball vacuum cleaner.

One of Dyson’s best ever sellers was the DC04. It was so good that when they face-lifted and redesigned it to create the DC07, they left many things unchanged. next, they face-lifted the DC07 and it became the DC14.
Guess what? Those mechanicals didn’t change too much then either. What this tells us is the DC14 was a machine that after two face-lifts, remained essentially the same. This suggests the basic design and mechanicals are tried and tested over several models.
This is further supported by the fact that later non-ball Dysons retained the same basic mechanicals as the DC14. The US market DC17, the DC27 and the new DC33 appear to be basically the same machine as the DC14. Albeit, face-lifted versions with a few design tweaks here and there.
It is a design honed over many years. A mechanical setup that has been tried and tested across several Dyson models over many years.

The Dyson DC15
The DC15 is the largest ball machine Dyson made and the first "Ball" machine. They are a full-sized family model with a larger dust capacity than any of the other ball machines mentioned on this thread.
The DC15 "The Ball" was released in 2005 in three variants, the DC15 All Floors, Allergy and Animal. It has a ball instead of a wheel, which in conjunction with a universal joint on the cleaner head makes it possible to steer the machine by twisting the handle to the right or left. The cleaner uses the Root Cyclone technology also used in the DC14.

In our opinion, they are built more robustly than the smaller Dyson ball models although known to be rather complex to repair for the inexperienced. They came with three tools rather than the one multi tool the smaller ones come with; they are a serious machine! But be warned if considering one: They are heavier than other ball models. Ladies sometimes complain they are harder to carry up and down stairs.
These are very hard to come by now in good condition. Many have been hacked around by amateur repairers.

The Dyson DC16
The DC16 was Dyson's first handheld vacuum cleaner based on the same technology as in their DC14 and DC15 root cyclone upright vacuum cleaners. The DC16 had 36 airwatts of suction. The DC16 weighs 1.5kg.

The product was also available in an "Issey Miyake" limited edition in which the manifold on the cyclone assembly is pink instead of the standard yellow, and an Animal version that features a motorized brushbar for picking up pet hair and gold cyclone manifold. Also in the range was the DC16 "Car and Boat" which was designed for car and boat cleaning, and came with a car 12v charger and has a blue cyclone manifold.

The Dyson DC17
The Dyson DC17 is an upright cleaner launched in October 2006 in the US. Although visually similar to the DC14, it contains new technologies, and is designed specifically for North American carpets. The first upgrade is the use of Dyson's new Level 3 Root Cyclone.
This system incorporates 11 cyclones to more efficiently filter sand and dust particles out of the airstream. In this system, the airflow travels from the low speed outer cyclone to two intermediate cyclones that filter out the bulk of dust and sand particles that are drawn into the system. Beyond that, the airflow flows through the remaining eight high speed cyclones which filters out any remaining dust particles out of the airstream.
The Level 3 Root Cyclone improves upon the original Root Cyclone system with its capability to more efficiently separate sand particles from the air flow; contaminants that the current Root Cyclone has difficulty with. Early versions of these machines had a tendency to suffer from dislodged cyclone seals and then completely blocking the entire cyclone system. An updated cyclone assembly with improved seals was introduced late in their lifespan and was available as a spare part; many were supplied under warranty by Dyson.

The second change with the DC17 upright is the brushroll design. While the brushrolls used on the DC07, DC14, and DC15 were designed with European carpets in mind, the DC17's brush roll was designed for North America with a cylindrical shape, a large diameter, and short stiff bristles. A separate motor drives the brushroll, unlike the DC07 and DC14 which use clutches that utilize power from the main motor.
The third change is a new colour scheme that indicates the colour theme for future Dysons. The bright colours and silver tones are toned down in favour of shiny metallic accents and titanium as the main colour for the entire machine.

The Dyson DC18
The Dyson DC18 Slim, launched in September 2006, is a slimmer and lighter weight successor of the DC15 Ball upright. A major difference between the DC15 and DC18 is the weight. The DC18 is lighter weight at 6.6 kilograms, or 15.8 pounds. In comparison, the DC15 weighs 8.6 kilograms, or 19.95 pounds. The DC18's Root Cyclone system has been trimmed down to better accommodate the machine's slimmer profile. While the DC15 uses 8 cyclones, the DC18 uses 6. The bin capacity comparison between the two models is DC18 1.7 litres (0.4 gallons) and DC15 2.5 litres (0.71 gallons).

In addition, the ball design has been modified for the DC18, and is not as complex as the DC15 ball unit. Rather than riding on a large ball that encloses the primary motor, the DC18 rides on a thin, cigar shaped roller that yields more space for separate motor enclosure and airway paths.

The DC18 machines were known for the undercarriage mechanism being prone to break causing the machine not to stand up. Its an expensive repair that has consigned many to the scrap heap. In comparison to other Dyson machines, few of these remain in use.

The Dyson DC19 and DC19T2
The DC19 was a revision of the previous DC08.

These two variants of the DC19 are similar apart from the wand handle and tool attachments.
The standard DC19 does not feature the "Telescopic Wrap" system. The DC19 T2 is the same as DC19, but was fitted with a vacuum-driven brushbar for better pick up on carpets as well as hard floors. The DC19T2 has different tool fittings than the standard DC19 which can make sourcing tools and cleaner heads problematic as they are not interchangeable.
The DC19 is called the DC29 in Australia.

The Dyson DC21

The DC21 is another variant on the DC08/DC19/DC20 and again shares many parts and is essentially the same machine as a DC19/20 apart from that it has a motor-powered brush head as opposed to a vacuum-driven brush head as with any DC08/19/20.
Sales volume was lower in the UK than the preceding DC08/19/20 models.

The Dyson DC23
The DC23 was available in the UK in three variants: The Allergy, the Animal and the Motorhead. In Australia and the US, other colours like blue were made.

The DC23 is visually quite similar to the DC19/20/21, but the changes during the facelift were many. The motor differed slightly; fundamentally still a YDK as with many of the previous cylinders, but a closer relative to the motors fitted to upright machines as they have a drive shaft. On a DC23, the motor has a shaft driven cooling fan on top of the motor (the one and only of its type fitted to a Dyson) that the repair trade has never quite figured out what it was for. The DC23 has a more complex and updated cyclone design similar to that seen in the DC22, an internal cylindrical HEPA filter and a different pre-filter to the older DC08/19/20/21 cylinders.

Other minor design details included the vented exhaust seen in the picture below. The tool socket fitting on these is of the design Dyson continued with for some time after. For those people with older 32mm tools, an adaptor can be bought (https://www.amazon.co.uk//dp/B00WF860E0/) to fit older tools to the DC23.

Think of the DC23 as a subtle facelift of the DC19/20/21 with the changes more internal than might be noticeable at first glance. They were generally regarded as robust and capable machines, and many still exist today. However, as with many Dysons, if buying refurbished, be sure to buy from a seller who knows what he is doing rather than someone who has economised on the rebuild. Some DC23 parts can be expensive for those hoping to refurbish on a budget.
Dyson are now winding down spares supply for these machines with a view to discontinuing them, but the after-market already makes filters, motors and many other components, so your DC23 can live for a few years yet.

The Dyson DC24
The DC24 was the first first small ball machine.

Despite some marketing to the contrary, the DC24 is best suited to people who live in small apartments/houses, without hairy dogs or many children as it's a small machine. Despite what anyone tells you, a small machine will never do the job of a big machine.
The DC24 is a compact machine, and the handle slides down into the machine for easy storage. You can see from the picture below just how compact and light the Dyson DC24 is.
Again: This model is not particularly suitable for those who have big houses, kids, cats and dogs. It is more suited to the the single or couple household really. Many people use them as a secondary "upstairs" machine in order that the lady of the house doesn't have to carry the "serious downstairs machine" upstairs.

The DC24 is a small, ultra-lightweight Dyson ball featured in the video below, and demonstrated by our model above, weighing in at a mere 5.4 kilos (That's less than 12 pounds if you think in imperial).
These machines were criticised for having Johnson brushroll motors that had a quite short life. And indeed, they do fail prematurely. However, that said, you can buy OEM brushroll motors at a keen price and there are good fitting tutorials to assist you in the repair when they fail. Despite the brushroll motor issue that some regard as built in obsolescence or a design fault, they quite rightly remain popular machines. As long as you understand that they are for quite light duty use, a DC24 will serve you well.

The Dyson DC25
The DC25 is a full size Ball upright vacuum, the replacement for the DC15 and DC18.

The DC25 vacuum has a washable pre-filter as most Dysons, and a HEPA filter that can be washed a few times.
This vacuum is broadly similar to the DC15, but a little smaller and lighter. Also broadly similar to the DC24, but a larger version.

The Dyson DC26
Ultra compact cylinder model, the DC26, known as the Dyson "City" was claimed to be the World's smallest vacuum cleaner. Even smaller than the DC22. The machine is so small that it will fit onto a piece of A4 paper.

With a very small dust container of 0.68 litres, and cord length of 5 metres, it was designed for small dwellings with primarily hard floors. It weighs just 5.6 kg and has a claimed 160 AirWatts suction power.
Relatively few remain due to low sales volume originally coupled with very high genuine spare part prices. Production was never high enough to warrant the after-market making many spares for these.

The Dyson DC27

The DC27 was a less-popular update of the DC14. The DC27 is a full size upright which has wheels rather than a ball, an auto-adjusting cleaner head and "root-cyclone" technology.

Available in "All Floors" or "Animal", the only difference between the two being the Animal had a gold coloured cyclone top and a HEPA post-motor filter, and the All Floors had a yellow coloured cyclone top and a normal fleece pad type post-motor filter.

The Dyson DC33 and DC33c
Confusingly, there are two Dyson models designated DC33: The DC33 and the DC33c.
The DC33 Upright:

The DC33 is an upright vacuum cleaner that replaced the DC27. Revised version of the DC27/DC28. Replacement for the DC14, upright wheeled cleaner that does not use ball technology. Available as Multi Floor (Yellow), Stubborn (White), Animal (Purple), i (Red). The DC33 has a plastic telescopic pole with smaller diameter than the metal telescopic pole of the DC14, so attachments from older Dyson's such as the DC14 do not fit the DC33.

This model more closely resembles the old DC14 than the DC27 did, using exactly the same style of floorhead as the DC14, DC07 and DC04. The plastic wand pole has been criticised as a lowering of quality from the older metal type, and also causes the main spine of the cleaner to flex more, without the support of the metal wand.

The fact that older model's tools were not interchangeable was also criticised, with many buyers trading up from the DC07 or DC14 to the DC33, and finding that their old tools would not fit, but Manchester Vacs were the first to address that with an adaptor (https://www.amazon.co.uk//dp/B00WF860E0/). The DC33 uses a single motor for the suction and to drive the brushroll via a mechanical clutch as on the DC04, DC07 and DC14. This unit has been discontinued as of July 2013. The DC33 was the last of the standard non-ball Dyson vacuums, and for some, regarded as the last "proper" Dyson.
The DC33c:
In mainland Europe, the DC33c is a cylinder machine that is similar to the DC37 and DC39.

The Dyson DC40
The DC40 was launched in 2012 and is basically a shrunken down DC41 (see below).

It's lightweight, however, the cable is shorter, the bin is smaller, the cleaner head is not as wide on early non-ERP models, the motor provides less suction power and the tubes are thinner.

The Dyson DC41

The DC41 was launched in 2011. It had several new design features. Primarily, the active base plate. This is a springy soleplate designed to adjust to any carpet height and any type of flooring and seal in the suction to make optimal contact. Secondly, all the tubing and wiring is inside the ball so there's all the weight in one centre and this also makes the ball more manoeuvrable as there is nothing around the round ball to get in the way.
Furthermore, radial root cyclone technology to capture more dirt and dust than any other cyclone. You get a direct air path for direct airflow which is one of the reasons why this is more powerful than previous models.
In addition, there's a long and narrow sock design pre motor filter for a larger surface area to capture more allergens and bacteria.
The lack of a foot pedal kick stand allows convenience for the user and also in event of the vacuum being dropped, the stabilisers recline rather than break hence why so many DC25s needed a complete chassis replacement.
The ducting is all rounded to optimise airflow like with the DC04/07 models. No bottleneck tubing.
The wand and hose have been improved for quick removal, the handle remains on the vacuum body whilst the plastic wand and hose are only in use. The lack of a handle gives more flexibility as it could get in the way of reaching awkward places like under sofas for example.

Finally, people complained the plastic was flexible, however this was done to minimise snapping of plastics. They can now absorb shocks rather than the "solid" plastic which shattered after being under shock.
Problems with the the DC41: Early DC41s are generally disliked by the after-market refurbishing trade due to them being more flimsy than their predecessors making warranties problematical. There was also a design fault (that Dyson improved with the MK2 ERP versions) that meant the central soleplate wheel came out, this causes wear to the wheel mounting on the cleanerhead gearbox and the machine becomes very hard to push as it sucks down to the floor harder. The Dyson DC47

The DC47 was released in 2012, and is a smaller cylinder model which is an updated DC38 (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php?topic=2959.msg24218#msg24218). It differs to the DC38 in that it has the new two tier cyclone, and also the new two channel floor tool.
It weighs 6 kilos and has a suction power of 180 Airwatts.

The Dyson DC49

Smaller than the cylinder Dyson's of around the same time, this one sits in the market where the DC26 once was. A very small and compact design that has the V4 digital motor. Dyson say it is their "smallest and quietest vacuum cleaner". Only suitable for very light duty use.

The Dyson DC50
The DC50 was released in 2012, and was the replacement for the DC24. It is a small and lightweight upright ball cleaner that - like the DC24 - is only suitable for very light duty use (despite marketing claims to the contrary).

The brushroll has the soft fibre bristles found in the DC35 and DC44 cordless models. However, the black soft bristles on the brushroll wear out very quickly; which means buying a new brushroll more often than might be typical with most Dysons. Further confusion is caused when buying brushrolls as there are two versions: The standard and the ERP. The Dyson V8 (and V7) (SV10 and SV11)

Introduced in 2016, the Dyson V8 (also confusingly called the SV10) is an updated version of the DC59/V6 with better battery life (up to 40 mins without the brush heads is claimed), modifications to the bin emptying mechanism, and reported quieter operation than its predecessor due to a different noise frequency and noise dampening post motor filter. 28 Air watts on normal power and 115 in turbo mode. Their motorised floor heads are driven by their own separate motors.

With the V8, Dyson introduced a new tool fitting socket which means that tools from previous Dyson models won't fit without an adaptor. However, the spare parts after-market has already responded to this and Dyson V8 tool adaptors are now available.

Dyson also market a machine badged as the V7 (also confusingly called the SV11).

The Dyson V10 (SV12)

The Dyson V10 (also confusingly called the SV12) was launched on the 6th March 2018.
Dyson made the optimistic claim that it "makes corded vacuums obsolete" and that they have stopped developing corded vacuums (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/DysonForum/index.php/topic,3501.msg28881.html#msg28881). Whilst it isn't at all true that corded vacuums will be obsolete anytime soon, the V10 does have more capability than its cordless predecessors.

Claiming up to 60 minutes usage time between charges and also claiming (with caveats) the "same suction of a full size vacuum", it does feature a larger dust collection canister and a digital motor.
Launched in the UK in three variants (differences being only the tools that come with them): "Total Clean", "Absolute" and "Animal", launch prices were £499.99, £449.99 and £399.99 respectively.

These are essentially a face-lifted DC40. However, although ostensibly the same, Dyson - as they do - have made them different enough that not all parts are interchangeable with the DC40. For example, the cyclone unit looks the same but differs ever so slightly so one doesn't fit the other. Same with the internal hose underneath (that is prone to splitting prematurely) and many other parts on these machines.

The Dyson V11 (SV14)

Ostensibly similar to the V10, the Dyson V11 launched in March 2019 and is basically a slightly face lifted and improved V10. It keeps the same basic design, with the larger bin (smaller on some Asian market models) inline with the motor for claimed better performance over the older models, such as the Dyson V8.
There’s a slightly bigger battery on the V11 than the V10, which increases the weight to just over 3kg.
Another update is the new V11 motor, which Dyson claims is 20% more powerful than the V10, delivering 185 air watts. The improvement in suction comes via the more powerful motor, but Dyson has made some improvements to airflow, too. These include a more efficient diffuser design that straightens airflow thus reducing turbulence, and a new impeller design.
Another design difference to the previous V7, V8 and V10 vacuums is the addition of an LCD screen on the back of the unit that displays battery level and other information.
