Title: DC05 hose connector "elbow" removal
Post by: Halfie on January 03, 2015, 08:49:03 pm
First, I'm really pleased to have discovered this forum.  Isn't it great?

Now to the topic.  My DC05 had just stopped working with a nasty burnt motor smell, so I found the Dyson medic site and the extremely useful guide on replacing the motor.  http://www.dysonmedic.com/DC05%20Folder/DC05%20motor%20change.html (http://www.dysonmedic.com/DC05%20Folder/DC05%20motor%20change.html)  Things were going well until I tried to remove the elbow where the hose connects to the body.  The instructions said "It requires some effort but just pull it straight up. Using leverage with a screwdriver may damage the plastic so is not recommended."

Well, I pulled and pulled as per the guide until, eventually, the elbow came free.  Unfortunately there was a cracking sound as it did so, and I found that the thin tab which slots into the machine had broken off into the cable winding area.  Perhaps I should have used a screwdriver after all.

I think no serious damage has been done; it might be slightly wobbly when I put it back but it should still work OK.

Now I have come to a standstill as I need a Torx T15 screwdriver and Screwfix have run out of the ones I wanted.  I have some Torx bits but they fit on a small socket driver which won't fit down the hole in the case.

I'm looking forward to finding out which motor I have ...

Welcome to the site Halfie.  :tiphat:

I am not sure what Screwfix charge, but the ones we have are >>here<< (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/Dyson/Dyson-Torx-Star-Screwdriver-T15). You generally need a 100m shaft to work on a Dyson, and most screwdrivers are 75mm. As far as I know, only Silverline (not good) and Draper (quite good) make them. We keep the Draper ones. We have some Smiths ones coming though, they are doing us a run of the right ones.  8)

Lets hope you have a YDK motor in there, as fixing up the other type takes more parts.

I am sure we can dig you out an elbow FOC in the event you choose to get the motor from us when you are ready. Regardless of who you use though, feel free to ask advice as you go.

Thanks MVacs.  Screwfix advertise a set of six Torx drivers, with a minimum length of 100mm, for £4.87.  Not much good, though, if they haven't got any!  I could order one from you but I'd want to include it in my order for the right motor when I've found out which one it is.  I'll see if I can borrow a T15 driver meanwhile.

Thanks for the offer of an elbow, but I think the old one will still be OK.

Am I right in thinking that there aren't many DC05s around?  They don't seem to be discussed on the forum much.

A long shaft T15 Torx driver is pretty much the one essential tool you need to work on any Dyson from the DC01 onwards. Some of the ball models require additional smaller sizes.
Buy a switch removal tool and a belt lifter too while you're about it.

Progress!  Today I bought a set of Torx screwdrivers (Draper T10, T15, T20, T25; £5.30 from Tool Station) and removed the motor.  The hardest bit was disconnecting the final two connectors.  My fingers were covered in carbon dust and too slippery to pull the cables apart.  A couple of pliers did it in the end.

The commutator was filthy; the ends of the brushes were ragged.  One dead-looking motor.

As a last ditch attempt to revive the it, though, (why spend money if you don't have to?) I cleaned the commutator segments as best as I could - with a screwdriver and some meths - and scraped accumulated carbon from the gaps between the segments by running the screwdriver down each one.  I also loosened off the brush housings and found that one of the brushes was stuck.  Pushing it into the housing freed it off.  I resecured the brushes and powered up.  There was a lovely blue arc and sizzling noises for half a second before I pulled out the plug.

The motor is the YDK, so I'll be ordering a replacement along with a couple of filters.

Ah yes that lovely ozone smell  :))  I've set all the smoke alarms off in the house before now trying to get new carbons to work  :'(  Mrs Madrat was not best pleased, nor was the dog or the cats  :underchair:

I considered replacing the brushes ... but only for half a second.  I've read enough here to realise that it's probably not worth bothering, especially when the commutator was in such a bad way.

Well, I've ordered the parts now, and am encouraged to see that Manchester Vacs promises next day despatch if possible.  That's good, because I need to hoover Dyson up the dust on the hearth rug where I've been dismantling in front of the fire!

That's my Dyson dismantling/assembly station as well.  I have to put down the special Dyson mat first or I get told off  :D

I plugged an unknown lux dolphin in a few weeks ago and nothing happened apart from a buzzing sound and then the smoke alarm going off, still not touched it since! Luckily SWMBO was out at the time

I'm not surprised, plugging marine mammals into the mains is just cruel  :boggleeye:

I am guessing it was you we dug out an elbow for yesterday, if so, it and the motor went out yesterday.

Well, it was gone 1030 pm when I put the order in, so either you were working late last night or some other lucky person will receive an unexpected bonus with their motor!  Mine was order no. 8813.

I guess someone else read the topic with the same problem then.  :chuckle:
