Title: 1980's Bendix 7159 Washing Machine
Post by: Madrat on July 26, 2015, 03:38:12 PM
I like to turn my hand to many things, car and caravan repairs and maintenance, satellite and aerial install, built and programmed a few PCs you name it I've had a go at it.  I have seconded at the back of the shed a early 80s rather sad looking Bendix compact that I really want to recon, it really just needs a new door seal and a tidy but I cant find a door seal anywhere  :'(

This isn't the actual one but its identical.

You could also ask on the UK white goods forum, a lot of the boys on there still have old spares lying in their storerooms.

 :censored:

RE my old Bendix compact 7159 washing machine with leaky door seal.

So thanks to Beko I found someone on the auto washer forum with one for sale

He sent photo's, yes that's the one, he only wanted 5 + postage

Asked him to get a total price and I would send payment

He asked if I could pay via a bank transfer, I said yes if he told me how to do it

That was last week, nothing from him since  :angryman:

OK something could have happened, thing do but it's not the first time things like this has happened, why do people do this?  If he's had a better offer why not just tell me?  :angryman:

Your right: It's possible that something happened, but maybe he decided he could get more for it.
People like that really piss me off.
Will start asking around for you, can't promise anything but will give it a good shot .

No probs: I know at least 1 of the guys has a garage full of old appliance parts, they're all new old stock so will try him first & let you know. All I have to do is convince him to let me into the garage   :icon_nod:. None of us have been in there since his dad died 2 years ago.

Sorry mate, not as yet. We only managed to get through about a third of what's in there, it has to be pulled out carefully & gone through box by box. I honestly didn't realise how much we'd packed in there. We were supposed to go back today but he got called into work so will be Monday before we get back in there.

No probs mate, you know what it's like: No matter where you start, the bit you need is always in the last box you look in ::) & I have to be honest when the shop was cleared it was just box everything up & get it into the storage unit, no thought or method.

For Madrat: Sorry mate, so far no luck. We've probably got about another 20 boxes to go through later in the week & that's it finished. Actually found a pump for an old hotpoint toploader that I needed 6 months ago & he told me wasn't there, but not what we were looking for.

OK so I've had a play, but first a bit of history.

The Bendix Compact was actually made by Eudora in Austria, and was called lots of different names throughout Europe, it's very well built but quite different to most other automatics.  The drum is fixed and has no springs or shock absorbers, The motor is an induction type with a variable belt pulley that control's the drum speed, probably why the spin speed is only 550rpm, but also why it is still going strong.

Info plate.

(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b29/madrat/SDC10023.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/madrat/media/SDC10023.jpg.html)

Surprisingly clean for a 30 -35 year old machine.

The motor and variable pulley.

(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b29/madrat/SDC10024.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/madrat/media/SDC10024.jpg.html)

This assembly is driven by a cam on the drum shaft and drives the program knob round, not found on other automatics but can be found on some twin tub's

(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b29/madrat/SDC10025.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/madrat/media/SDC10025.jpg.html)
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b29/madrat/SDC10027.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/madrat/media/SDC10027.jpg.html)

This little gizmo is what stops the machine spinning if the drum is out of balance.

(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b29/madrat/SDC10026.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/madrat/media/SDC10026.jpg.html)

Just look at the size and engineering of that water pump,  puts today's crap to shame.

(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b29/madrat/SDC10028.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/madrat/media/SDC10028.jpg.html)

The drain hose is starting to crack up, not bad for its age though.

(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b29/madrat/SDC10031.jpg) (http://s16.photobucket.com/user/madrat/media/SDC10031.jpg.html)

This was never going to be a full strip, so I just brushed out the dead spiders and fluff, and got to work with the 3 in 1 and a tub of grease. All done, switch on and...........  :censored:  has someone given this thing an E or something, its gone crazy  :o  It did a wash is 3 minutes and didn't even give the water time to get warm before it went into rinse  :snivel:  Top off, back off head scratch.  Ahh sorted, as the belt pulley adjusts the motor also rises and falls on a spring loaded pivot, it was stuck in the high so fast position, a quick poke and hey presto. Its also much quieter, the program mechanism used to tick away like and old clock, not now.

Sorry had camera up the wrong way, I am blond after all  :duh:

Will post video of motor and pulley moving later as I have developed a dribble  :censored:  :'(

Have cured my dribble problem, amazing what a bit of aquarium grade silicone can do  :))  the door seal is not like others, its flat and fits over a metal rim, now weather it is supposed to have some sort of clamp (like most other automatics) or due to wear, the water was seeping around this bit of the seal so I squeezed in a small amount of silicon fitted the seal and cleaned up. tried it today and its bone dry

This is a video of the motor going fro rinse into spin, its a bit dark but you get the idea.

So last week I decided to re spray the Bendix, a quick rubdown and a lot of masking off later and it was ready for painting, problem was I had no paint  :D  so a quick trip to Halfrouds for a large can of white.  There were some runs and blemishes but this was never going to be a concourse machine so I found some left over vinyl stickers and then raided Mrs Madrats card making draws to produce this.
