if toothed belt is removed or even with belt fitted you should be able to turn spigot with 2 fingers.
sounds like seized bearing or maybe spigot is jammed with hair ? remove torx screw from centre and pull off to inspect.

if you remove brushbar, inside the spigot there is a small torx screw, remove that and remove spigot to reveal bearing for inspection.
if it's rusty then could have seized, but does it turn with the belt removed ? if so its not that

The brush bar on my DC25 quit turning, I cleaned brush bar and checked belt everything looked good. Brush bar still would not turn. It appears the gear for the brush bar will not turn. Do these locked down? I have cleaned it up but it will not budge. Do I need a new sole plate?

Thanks for clearing that up. there advertised on ebay @ 13 non erp and @ 22ish erp seems crazy dyson did a few mm,s difference. just a tip, I took the ends off 2 worn bbars usual carbon brushes worn and removed the carbon brushes off 1 and replaced with the nylon brushes off the other superglued in so have 1 good bbar with only the 4 blue nylon brushes on, works a treat.

All great and very capable machines.

Those Ensign SM1 vacuums are quite rare in good condition now. Also you dont see many of the white X1.1 machines in good condition.

It helps that I bought both vacuums as brand new items. ;) Cheers.

Original Dyson brushrolls differ by a few mm meaning they are not interchangeable (unless Dyson fixed that).

Most aftermarket ones fit both now.

There is an old topic on the subject here: DC50 Animal ERP Brushroll

Sounds like a battery to me, what did you find out eventually?

I was beginning to wonder IF anybody would respond especially as this seems like such a common issue.

Found the solution by accident in some obscure section of the internet and totally by chance.  Yes it is a battery issue but only in as much as the weight of the battery eventually causes intermittent  connection on terminals.   A strategically placed cable tie placed to hold battery tight in the machine has completely solved this issue.  Hope this helps somebody some day.
