This was offered up on our vacuum collectors facebook group for free, so I paid the postage and it arrived last week

Never gelled with these as much as the Turbopower 1's. These are a clean fan design, rather than the dirty fan of Hoovers of olde! Solid things though, and treated to a fresh bag, filter and belt once a year will soldier on
Plugged it in in the garden (previous owner had warned me it was broken) and had a listen

Ah, sounds healthy then!
Pulled the motor out to have a look

and the issue was instantly clear, b :censored:y Amtek motors...
Took the rest apart to check the fancase bearing
(https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-jPAQVcGDvys/U_TeOnuzqdI/AAAAAAAAcYc/FHznI1tBw_s/s800/%255BUNSET%255D.jpg)
I had a fancase bearing (although a new old stock turbopower 1 one from the 1980's), but the armature end one was smaller. Buggar. However, I then had a brainwave, and grabbed my little box full of dyson clutch spares, and found a nice bearing, which fitted on a treat! So, a Dyson clutch bearing is the same size as a TP2 Amtek motor one! It can take the rpm, its designed for 1400w motors.
Lashed it all together and had a test run...
Lovely! The grumble on wind down is the bearing I think, it's from an era of 440w motors, the vortex does the same as it has the same bearings fitted. Must buy some modern bearings and change them (and re-bearing all my tp1 motors whilst I have spares)
Now it was working, I could begin the stripdown

Much better! Not sure what I'll do with it, but I havent had a TP2 for a while, and it's been an easy refurb. I plan to get some better bearings, as the 1980's one doesnt like winding down from 1200w, so hopefully some modern ones will make it a bit smoother! But it's making a good upstairs machine for now!
