Hi,
I'm trying to replace the motor on my DC04 Zorbster. It is a YDK YV 514 and it has 4 wires instead of 2. the additional wires look like some sort of cut out circuitry ?
Can I replace it with a normal DC04 YDK motor ? Why does the Zorbster have there wires. is it something to do with the carpet cleaning function.

Behind the bin, on the chassis, is a microswitch. The other two wires feed that switch and it was used when the bin is removed to make the motor run at half speed when using the Zorbster function.
If you only want it as a normal vac, then yes you can do away with the wiring to that switch and use two wires and not four - and fit a normal YDK motor.

That seems a bit strange to me though, why on earth would Dyson do that when they could have just flowed down instructions to switch all functions of the machine off if emptying the bin. i can't see any reason why the carpet cleaning function would need to carry on !! never mind.

Will the YV-511, YV-2200, YV-16K24EE or YV-16K24ED do the job ?
I noticed where you have it listed in your shop you stated it could be modified quite easily to maintain the full functionality of the Zorbster

If you wanted to keep the Zorbster function, you swap over the thermal cut out with the 4 wires on.
The motor we sell replaces the numbers listed, but if you were using a used motor (for example) as a replacement, it isn't always ideal to use a faster one. For example, the YV2200 is fitted to the DC07 and DC14 and usually causes too much suction on a DC04 if fitted. And it will be glued to the floor.

Sorry that response left me a little confused, which leaves me with one more question.
If i'm buying a DC04 motor, which isn't a direct replacement to the one I have just removed (YDK YV 514)
Which one do i buy ?
I gather from that response that it isn't the 220-240v motors labelled with YV-511, YV-2200, YV-16K24EE and YV-16K24ED, even though the listing implies from the mention of adapting it to the Zorbster motor by refitting the cut out circuitry that it would be correct

It depends where you are buying it from, because different manufacturers differ with specs. All will fit, but some perform better than others (and some are cheap crap (http://dysonmedic.co.uk/cheap-replacement-dyson-motor/) of course).

If you want to keep Zorbster functionality, swap over your TOC. If yours is shot, we have those >>here<< (https://manchestervacs.co.uk/Dyson/DC04-zorbster-thermal-cut-out-toc).
If you don't want/need Zorbster functionality, leave the new two wire TOC on and wire it as a standard machine: Blue from flex to black on motor. Brown from flex to switch, then out of switch down to red on motor (if yours has a 4 prong switch its blue>switch>black and brown>switch>red). That means you are bypassing the micro switch in the chassis in that instance, and the wiring for it is now obsolete.

I have ordered the motor from you. You are right. the ones on ebay that go for £15 do look a little suspect. Though I have ordered one before to fix my mums DC04 and the belt melted when it was first used, so that could possibly be the motor spindle getting too hot

Seized brushroll or clutch more likely if a belt is melting on a new motor.

Will be clutch or brushroll. I had one of my refurbs do that when the circlip fell off the clutch and it seized. The motor spindle just burnt through the jammed belt causing a right old stink!
