So we got an early DA001 fixed soleplate in for service. And I noticed something I dont recall seeing before on the machine's type plate.
Thinking of DC01/DA001 machines, we typically see Malmesbury as the place of manufacture.

In our museum, we have a couple of early ones showing Chippenham as the place of manufacture.

This DA001 we had in today (fixed soleplate, early script and metallic finish) had a 317 serial number that wasn't even in our serial number database. :o
It also has Bath as the place of manufacture.

Has anyone seen this before? I dont recall seeing that. Maybe I just never noticed.
A little Google snooping tells me that Dyson Technology Ltd was registered at Sycamore House, Bathford, Bath, Avon, BA1 7RS up to 21/10/96.
Which is this property. Which Google suggests was once James Dyson's house (patents filed from there in his name, etc).

Now correct me if I am wrong someone, but this suggests this DA001 may be one of the very earliest DA001s made? And as such is quite rare?

Wow! I've never seen that before. Either Chippenham or malmsbury
-
When are you swapping it for a nice dc14 then?
-
They were made in Chippenham at the start but then shortly moved to Malmesbury from then-present so yes that is a very early DA001 ;)
I imagine that because Chippenham is quite local to Malmesbury so perhaps he probably wanted more land to expand his factory which went well.
Additional factory info- Then around the time when the DC08 came out, they wanted to expand more, but they weren't allowed so had to do it abroad (hence the move to Malaysia)

Haha - just stripped the thing A) to clean as its dead dirty and B) to see what motor is there - just came here to announce i'd found an Ametek lol :biglaugh: - lucky the poor thing came to me - he has definatly not been loved :snivel: the motor is housing was caked in plaster dust and the motor was covered in the stuff - luckily the motors in perfectly good condition - reckon its not been loved and hardly been used - used to suck up house rubble and then left in a cupboard as its mint on the outside and no fading, stickers are all in mint condition and present! - just ashame about its past life before he came to me - i'ma hold on to him and look after him, love him and keep him :coffee:
