Must be a popular thing on these. We had one in today with no power going to the cleanerhead. I remembered what you had said here and guest what?

Yup, broken wire exactly as you described.

Hi

Just had a DC40 in with same problem. Looks like this will be a common problem. The wire are actually being sliced or cut, unfortunately this job had to be a fast turn around, so I was unable to try and see what was cutting the wires, but it doesn't look like it is just due to flexing. Couldn't figure out how the cyclone assembly came apart. Pulled, tapped , twisted, nothing!! A blast with the air line cleaned it up well though.

The one we did above came back a week later duff again. We extended the wire this time to see if that helps.

I agree, the wire looks like a clean slice and not much is obvious as to what might have caused that.

Meanwhile, I have ordered in some looms. I think we are gonna need them.

To be honest I have advised the customer that this will probably be a temporary repair as I can see this failing again soon! Was gonna order some looms but they don't seem to be in stock with the wholesalers I use.

We ordered 20 a few days ago with the only one that stocks them and got six. The rest are on backorder. Dyson are really slow at supplying the distributors with everything at the moment and we are already looking abroad and to the after-market for some stuff because of that.

The small loom to fix this problem is this one.

They can now be found on our shop here: DC40 Yoke Wiring Loom (https://shop.manchestervacs.co.uk/dyson-upright-vacuum-cleaner-spares/dc40-spare-parts/dc40-yoke-cable-923188-01)

Hi, we just got one of these in, looks possible it might be the same wiring problem. Can someone explain how to get at these wires? We cannot see how to remove the second half of the ball or which 2 screws you refer to.

So we finally got into one (donated to us or we would not have risked it) and true to form the white wire is broken.
But its wasn't as easy as you made out .
We're not convinced it will go back together so we have the greatest respect to any of you who have achieved it

May someone briefly explain how to get the machine's right side of the ball off? Please ? :)
I have one here with a brush that's not spinning as well, having no idea where that wire is.. I'm guessing it's in the ball, correct?

I'm just jumping into one for the first time today, along with a big ball.. to be posted in the appropriate thread.

Do you mean this Headchoice?
Also attached a picture of the broken wire ... but most of my pictures are out of focus, sorry.
Title: Re: dyson dc40 brushbar not turning
Post by: theheadschoice on April 18, 2016, 12:44:58 AM
Why yes, so that top picture is just underneath the right ball cover and the second picture with the wire, that's around the bottom of the machine when it's been completely disassembled?

Believe it or not the guy who brought the machine on went irate on me shortly after posting this, I explained it was a difficult procedure I hadn't done before and I was going through the proper channels to ensure I did not break his machine.. since I didn't have anything to replace it in the store. After you guys helped me with that DC15 I've already done another since and it was a piece of cake but man, you sure can't please everyone. I was just about to tear into it too, kinda bummed. but I wasn't getting a reading from the plug where the brush head plugs in and all the wires going down had current. "the one that got away.."

Anyway thank you for your prompt reply, auto. I appreciate this forum and all of you here.

In answer to your questions; Yes and Yes.
There is always one job that never seems to go right from beginning to end, mostly the customer is understanding, sometimes you get someone just looking for an argument, the joys of dealing with public.

Thanks auto! @madrat, I believe my ex-customer had a problem with the timeframe on completing this repair.
I felt like saying buddy, you have no clue what you're expecting me to snap my fingers and magically fix... but like I said you can't please everyone.

Yup I made up my mind if anyone wants me to complete that repair its $149.95 USD with zero warranty.

I don't blame you. But like all repairs, the first couple are usually the hardest. I've done two DC15 looms since the one you guys helped me out, last one was a breeze.

Hi, tested the brush head on my DC40 and it's fine. The brush head switch is fine but no power to the socket at the brush head. So it's definitely the yoke cable at fault. I've tried to remove the yoke but haven't succeeded yet. Anybody have a link or idiots guisde to remove the yoke to get to the cable please?
Title: Re: dyson dc40 brushbar not turning

It's similar to a DC41 yolk replacement. It's been almost two years since I owned a DC40 so I'm going by memory:
Remove the hose from the back of the vacuum's ball
Remove the balls (Filter side and unscrew all the visible screws for the filter holder grill
and the other side has a glamour cap which needs to be turned anti clockwise, then there's a black ring which needs to be turned anticlockwise to be screwed off

The left hand side will then come off. Remove the two screws  holding the semi circular white bracket and all the visible screws from underneath the yolk and both sides. The yolk assembly then comes off from both sides of the motor housing and it's pretty easy when you do it, it may look hard but it's much easier than you think ;)

Hi, thanks so much. I was almost there without actually knowing it. What a horrible design that yoke wiring etc is! Whoever designed that should be ashamed. Got it all back together apart and working from the toothed notched wheel thing. I just couldn't line it up with it on so removed it. Then when I put it all back together I couldn't get enough clearance / room to refit it. What does it actually do because it locks in postion upright without it.

You may not actually need the T8 for that job, see how you go with the T10 and T15.

I have a DC40 in for repair. The Brushbar only spins when the machine is tilted back at a certain angle. Move the angle and the Brushbar stops. I checked the Wiring Loom and there was a cut in it. I replaced the Wiring Loom with a brand new one. But still the problem exists. Is there an actuator switch ?

I must see if I can take pics, Ive  done  so many I can do them with my eyes closed.

Dyson solutions
On the black casing that holds the motor in place is a small micro switch , Often these machines are worked on by inexperienced and they do not make sure that actuator is not in the correct possition and you end up with a situation like your finding. Simply clip in the catuator the correct way and you should be all good..

Just a by the way , never rigg the cleaner heads on these newer dysons to the mains like you could do on older dc 18's 24's and 25's . These heads use a 220v DC motor and the rectifier pcb board sits in the main vacuum body ( older cleaner heads had the pcb in the cleaner head itself. If you plug them into mains , BOOOM  :dead-dyson: Had 3 customers do that this year already when attempting a DIY job

Hey beko, I owe you a pint for that awesome pictorial strip down

I had the dreaded broken wire(s)  :'( and was about to buy a new brush bar motor (what a waste of money that would have been!)

I decided to take a quick look around the net and came across this amazing forum and your equally amazing thread.

Thanks for taking the time to put that all together (the pics, as well as the DC40)
