Hi, I have been googling and found this forum so here goes!
I have 2 dc16s that were working intermittently (few seconds running then stopping) I bought a non genuine battery to see if it would resurrect them. When I put the new battery in and put the vacuum on the charger the light went red and then flashing red. The vacuum was dead when I tried it, even with the old battery that was doing the 5 seconds thing! I tried the new battery in both machines and now both are totally dead. My question is, has the non genuine battery killed my dyson (x2) Has this happened to anyone else?
Thanks if you've managed to get this far 😀

It's the chicken or the egg situation - is it the battery or the vac motor / electronics ?
I like to have a known good battery and charger to try, and help diagnose fault.
Also check and clean the vacs battery connections as well as the cyclone unit for blockage.
You could actually have a faulty charger...

Thanks ryevac,
My sister has one too so I've tried my genuine batteries in it they work for a few seconds. I've tried her genuine battery in mine and it's totally dead. My husband checked the output on my charger and he said it was fine. So I think we've narrowed it down to the non genuine battery? Could it have killed them both just by inserting the battery? It didn't power them at all.

Strange
If you have tried a "known" to be good battery in your unit and it still doesn't work then i would assume the hand unit has failed in that case

Have you tried the magnet on the filter?
-
No I haven't, how do I do that? Both vacuums are totally dead now though!

There is a small magnet at the bottom of the filter, with just the mother unit hold a different magnet to this area and pull the trigger, you will need a charged battery though. What voltage is your charger putting out? Also check battery contacts are clean.

So I've tried that, no luck. I don't know what the output was exactly but hubby said it was ok. I guess that's it then?
