Title: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 10, 2018, 10:58:32 pm
A fair old while ago now, I won this on ebay for £15 not far away

[attachimg=1]

A Miele Revolution 5000!

It was quite battered underneath

[attachimg=2]

Had all it's 3 small tools

[attachimg=3]

The exterior shell was a bit dirty, and the writing worn quite badly

[attachimg=4]

All the controls for this vac are on the handle, all you get is the main on/off button and cord reel pedal

[attachimg=5]

The control centre

[attachimg=6]

Hose was quite worn too

[attachimg=7]

Electro Plus head even more so!

[attachimg=8]

[attachimg=9]

I pulled this out without even removing the base plate

[attachimg=1]

When I collected it, the guy said he had fitted a new bag for me. My heart sank a little bit, but amazingly it was a genuine bag! Which is probably why the inside was so clean

[attachimg=2]

The carbon post motor filter seemed in good order, however it also had the Active Air Clean filter fitted over that that comes in the box of bags... it was quite black, but a fair bit of that could be the carbon from the post filter itself

[attachimg=3]

Some evidence of past repair

[attachimg=4]

However, it was not without it's flaws, mainly the usual Miele Revolution one...

A stuttery hose connection. Still, it was useable with care, Charlie was certainly intrigued

[attachimg=5]

[attachimg=6]

So, eventually, it's time rolled around!

[attachimg=7]

I started with the wand

[attachimg=8]

However, I could not get it apart, and didn't want to force it and break it, so I dismantled the latch instead

[attachimg=9]

I took this inner spreader piece out, which was a mistake as it was a complete sod to get back in...

[attachimg=1]

Wand abandoned, tome for the Electro Plus (it was hammering down with rain when I got this in from the shed so it was a bit damp)

[attachimg=2]

Baseplate off

[attachimg=3]

[attachimg=4]

Rubber squeegee out

[attachimg=5]

Front wheels out

[attachimg=6]

Brushroll out and endcaps off

[attachimg=7]

Top shell removed

[attachimg=8]

Belt ID

The business part is underneath another inner cover

[attachimg=1]

A big square of lead helps weigh the head down so it always flips around to the correct orientation

[attachimg=2]

Little hairy PCB

[attachimg=3]

Removed

[attachimg=4]

The wires to the brushroll motor run underneath this little guard part

[attachimg=5]

Motor lifts out with the wires free

[attachimg=6]

Is a DOMEL motor. Never heard of them before tbh

[attachimg=7]

A date stamp! 2004

[attachimg=8]

The power wires start in the neck of the head

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 10, 2018, 11:22:00 pm
And can be found by undoing the screws

[attachimg=1]

The 2 wires are easily removed

[attachimg=2]

The locking latch is removed

[attachimg=3]

And the head is apart! Onto the troublesome hose now...

[attachimg=4]

The tools end splits apart with the removal of many screws. The rear piece has 2 screws of its own, and the main housing wont come apart without this bit removed

[attachimg=5]

The Anti-Static rod pops out

[attachimg=6]

Then the inner suction tube lifts out to reveal the power connections

[attachimg=7]

The hose itself has a spacer ring to meet up with the inner suction tube

[attachimg=8]

These are the contact rings for this end of the hose, that get caked in crap and become intermittant

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 10, 2018, 11:28:32 pm
The inside of the inner suction tube reveals a less than salubrious life...

[attachimg=1]

The wiring and PCB lift out

[attachimg=2]

This is the control panel. 3 buttons and lots of LED's

[attachimg=3]

The 3 buttons and the tiny springs underneath drop off (literally, be careful! They are also angled with the cover piece too, throws you for a second)

[attachimg=4]

The cover piece is printed on the back, not the top, which makes polishing it up a heck of a lot easier!

[attachimg=5]

The button holder pops off the PCB

[attachimg=6]

These are the contacts that run along the rings on the hose

[attachimg=7]

That end done, it's time for the machine end, and this was the end with the problem (I've had a few fixed now, and it's always this end, it's the strain on the hose that bends the contacts, so pay attention if your reading this for a fix to the cutting out problem, this might save your bacon!)

[attachimg=8]

These two screws come off first, but don't try and remove anything yet, just the screws...

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 10, 2018, 11:33:57 pm
Round the back, are these two screws. Remove these

[attachimg=1]

Then pop the cover off the hose and slide it up and out of the way

[attachimg=3]

[attachimg=2]

Then, the plug part pulls out and away, revealing the hopefully utterly bogging slip rings

[attachimg=4]

We'll clean this up later! Onto the main machine now

[attachimg=5]

The tool cover is gently removed to avoid snapping the hinge pivots

[attachimg=6]

One last shot of the decals, as these are going! No point in saving them

[attachimg=7]

Tool door spring is removed

[attachimg=8]

Tools removed

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb

And split down

[attachimg=1]

The dusting brush was particularly full of fluff

[attachimg=2]

That was easily fixed though

[attachimg=3]

Empty

[attachimg=4]

Post filter removed

[attachimg=5]

The main reason I dont think this filter needs replacing is the housing underneath is very clean! You can also see the pivot points that need popping out to lift the bag door off the main machine

[attachimg=6]

Free both sides and the bag door lifts free, the connector unplugs itself

[attachimg=7]

The plastic part that holds the hose entry port down unscrews

[attachimg=8]

Hose entry port lifts free now

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 10, 2018, 11:44:52 pm
Now this caused issues later on, because this is how the bag latch spring was sat, which isn't correct...

[attachimg=1]

Off came the latch anyway though

[attachimg=2]

Hose port cover falls out now

[attachimg=3]

Hose port itself pops out of the holding frame

[attachimg=4]

This spring clip braces the plug for the hose to stop it being pushed back when the hose is plugged in

[attachimg=5]

The plug itself lifts off of this bit

[attachimg=6]

Bag fill indicator out

[attachimg=7]

Tool door latch lifts off

[attachimg=8]

The spring lifts off

[attachimg=9]

Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb

Piston cover lifts off

[attachimg=1]

Piston and spring pop out

[attachimg=2]

Tool door latch itself pops off

[attachimg=3]

Now, the cover for the wiring that runs through the bag door can be lifted

[attachimg=4]

It all runs to this hinge, which is also a plug

[attachimg=5]

To remove the wires, there is a plastic peg that holds the terminals into the housing

[attachimg=6]

Once removed

[attachimg=7]

The wires pull gently out

[attachimg=8]

I did give them a damn good check over because I initially thought there was a broken wire, but they were utterly fine.

The hardly used bag the seller fitted can be removed now!

[attachimg=9]

Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 10, 2018, 11:54:18 pm
Pre motor filter was a bit grubby, but seen worse etc

[attachimg=1]

The bag holder pulls out

[attachimg=2]

We move to the back of the machine now, and one solitary screw holds the rear panel on

[attachimg=3]

The double connector plug does the rest, and the panel pulls up and off

[attachimg=4]

Under the panel we find the switch and circuit board that controls everything (on the non electric models, the adjustment potentiometer for the manual knob sits on this. remove the 2 screws to lift everything out as one unit

[attachimg=5]

This is a different PCB to the usual models with adjustment knob though

[attachimg=6]

The LED diffuser sits above/below (depending on your view) the PCB

[attachimg=7]

[attachimg=8]

The two pedals snap onto the middle part with these clips

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 10, 2018, 11:59:40 pm
Each pedal has a spring underneath it

[attachimg=1]

This model has the automatic cord rewind, which is operated by this rod here

[attachimg=2]

The visible knob on the pedal pushes this toothed part, which moves the other end backwards and forwards and pretty much just keeps the cord reel button pushed so it always reels the cord in

[attachimg=3]

[attachimg=4]

The outer trim piece pops off the rear panel (again, printed underneath which is mucho handy!)

[attachimg=5]

This is the reset button for the lifetime filter, it lifts out

[attachimg=6]

Time to move down a level now, and remove the motor housing cover

[attachimg=7]

[attachimg=8]

Much wear from the cable is visible here sadly

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 11, 2018, 12:04:52 am
This is the 'standby' switch, which sits in the parking bracket and turns the machine off when the floor head is docked (the heavier than usual Electro Plus doesnt play nicely with it though and jams it up...)

[attachimg=1]

Cord reel now

[attachimg=2]

Which is held in by one screw here

[attachimg=3]

And then just lifts out

[attachimg=4]

I always check the cable where it enters the reel on Miele's, have seen lots and lots where this is broken, torn up and have had one in for repair that was blowing the owners fusebox where the live and neutral were making sweet love...

[attachimg=5]

This one is fine however

But just to double check, 2 small screws release the reel sides, allowing for repair or replacement of the cable if needed, and a good de-fluffing

[attachimg=6]

This tube provides some sort of pressure equilization somewhere (I have no idea...)

[attachimg=7]

But, next out is the motor! I know what that does...

[attachimg=8]

Rubbers off

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 11, 2018, 12:09:29 am
The motor fan is very very clean on this, so I didn't bother removing it to clean, which is a usual Miele trick, especially when pattern bags are used!

[attachimg=1]

The motor and bag compartment seals can be removed now

[attachimg=2]

As can the motor sound deadening

[attachimg=3]

The furniture guard comes off now, but the side parking slot screw needs to be removed to achieve this

[attachimg=4]

Once the bumper is off the parking slot housing pops out

[attachimg=5]

The 3 wheels pop out of their holders

[attachimg=6]

Then the holders unscrew from the main chassis, and the 2 halves can be popped apart

[attachimg=7]

APART!

[attachimg=8]

The hose can't be washed annoyingly, what with the wires and electricity running through it

And that's it for tonight, we shall carry this on with the back together-ness very soon, for I am off to bed! NIght

Lets pick this back up then! First order whilst the parts are drying is the hose, we need to clean the contact rings

[attachimg=1]

A tin of lighter fluid and many cotton buds later, we have it looking alot cleaner!

[attachimg=2]

I have used WD40 for this job too on another Revolution, so there's that option too if you want it

Hose done, time for an exploded shot or 2

[attachimg=3]

[attachimg=4]

All the shiny stuff was machine polished as well, and we start by refitting the wheels

[attachimg=5]

Pop the metal brackets into the wheel holders

[attachimg=6]

Screw that to the machine

[attachimg=7]

Fit the wheels and voila!

[attachimg=8]

We now have a manouverabe base!

[attachimg=9]

Furniture Guard now, starting with fitting the parking bracket

[attachimg=1]

This can be fitted to the machine and screwed on. The front trim piece goes on next

[attachimg=2]

Lovely, ready to bash into furniture for another 10 years!

[attachimg=3]

Motor sound deadening now

[attachimg=4]

Motor and bag compartment seals

[attachimg=5]

The motor can be dropped in now

[attachimg=6]

Wierd pipe fitted

[attachimg=7]

Cord reel fitted

[attachimg=8]

Moving up a layer now, the pause button is fitted to the body

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 15, 2018, 09:56:32 pm
Filter life reset button fitted

[attachimg=1]

Now for the power indicator panel. This machine polished up a treat, and looks brand new now!

[attachimg=2]

[attachimg=3]

And fits back into the housing

[attachimg=4]

Cord rewind pedal now, the moving parts are clipped in

[attachimg=5]

Spring fitted

[attachimg=6]

And both pedals clipped down

[attachimg=7]

Underneath the control panel, the LED light tubes are clipped together

[attachimg=8]

And fitted

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 15, 2018, 10:02:28 pm
Electronics fitted now

[attachimg=1]

Bag holder fitted

[attachimg=2]

The pre motor filter washed up like new so in it goes

[attachimg=3]

[attachimg=4]

The pretty much new bag goes on

[attachimg=5]

Looking good now, time to move up a layer!

[attachimg=7]

First, some wires need to be fitted to a plug

[attachimg=6]

[attachimg=8]

Then the loom can be fed along the bag door

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 15, 2018, 10:06:04 pm
Bag fill indicator can go together now

[attachimg=1]

[attachimg=2]

[attachimg=3]

[attachimg=4]

[attachimg=5]

[attachimg=6]

Underneath, the hose socket

[attachimg=7]

Can be fitted to the hose inlet assembly

[attachimg=8]

The hose inlet assembly can be reassembled

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 15, 2018, 10:12:29 pm
This bit is quite fiddly, the hose hole cover is laid on the surface, and immediately rolls up a bit and slips down...

[attachimg=1]

Then with your 3 hands, hold it still, stop the hose socket from falling out and fit the hose inlet assembly into place and screw it down!

[attachimg=2]

The carbon filter got a good vacuum off and was fitted

[attachimg=3]

Small tools now. Lint strips back on the upholstry tool

[attachimg=4]

All fitted!

[attachimg=5]

The tool door can go back on now. The whole finish is sprayed on, it's paint, so polished up really well, just like doing a car. Sadly there was a fair bit of actual damage here and there

[attachimg=6]

And that's the main vacuum done!

[attachimg=7]

Spent many hours getting all the paint off the cable

[attachimg=8]

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000Hose S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 15, 2018, 10:18:54 pm
Hose now! The plug pushes onto the hose itself, I gave the contacts a slight tweak to make better contact with the slip rings

[attachimg=1]

Fitted

[attachimg=2]

The outer trim can be clipped and screwed on now

[attachimg=3]

Up to the other end of the hose now, and the polished up control panel has its buttons fitted and is clipped to its PCB

[attachimg=4]

Then all the electronic internals are fitted

[attachimg=5]

The internal suction channel is laid in, which highlights how utterly vital having all the wires tucked away properly is. Still not 100% sure it's right, the hose is a bit stiff to rotate.

[attachimg=6]

Cover is screwed on, again 18 hands are needed to stop the internals moving about as you position the cover...

[attachimg=7]

Floorhead now! The locking bracket is screwed onto the neck

[attachimg=8]

Then the wires are fed in

[attachimg=9]

Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 15, 2018, 10:23:22 pm
The brushroll motor is fitted and the wires run and covered up

[attachimg=1]

Tool adapter fitted and a tiny drop of grease placed on the pivot points

[attachimg=2]

PCB placed

[attachimg=3]

The internal cover is fitted

[attachimg=4]

Moving underneath

[attachimg=5]

We can fit the belt and brushroll

[attachimg=6]

Baseplate wheels fitted

[attachimg=7]

Rubber strip fitted

[attachimg=8]

And finally the baseplate itself is screwed on

[attachimg=9]
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: beko1987 on March 15, 2018, 10:27:57 pm
Finally the main cover can go on!

[attachimg=1]

The latch is fitted to the wand

[attachimg=2]

And she is done!

[attachimg=3]

[attachimg=4]

Some car trim gel perked up the plastics

[attachimg=5]

And a few coats of wax perked up the paintwork

[attachimg=6]

[attachimg=7]

[attachimg=8]

And here it is next to another little project I have to do, it's replacement!

[attachimg=1]

[attachimg=2]

[attachimg=3]

We have an after video

And then, I sold it! The new owner seems very pleased with it...

And there we go, the tale of when I owned a Miele Revolution 500!
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: aengus4h on September 01, 2018, 08:11:11 pm
Hi Beko

great write up, I also have the Revolution S500 vacuum and thought I'd post as it has developed a wee problem. The end of the extension pipe unexpectedly broke away where it connects into the power head, while the unit was on with the head running. Lots of arcing and sparks being spat at the carpets followed  while I scrambled to power it off. The remote control panel went blank and the head stopped running but the unit did continue to run at full power until I powered it off.

Thought it may be worth posting this as a heads-up to check for fractures for other users just in case. The extension tube is an expensive replacement part and unfortunately causes damage to the electronics in this type of failure.

That said I've had this one from new for around 17 years and its given flawless service in that time, until this failure. I've since stripped the hose down following your guide, found a track completely burned off the circuit board on the hose connector in the handle end which I have repaired with a wire. The unit still works at full power and now also the power head also runs, but sadly no remote control so no variable power or ability to turn the head on/off, its permanently on. Buzzed the cabling right through from the handle to the motor control board inside the unit and that's ok, so has to be one of the electronic boards. Managed to pick up a new extension tube off ebay at a good price, so at least its useable again, and got a Dyson V10 to use for the lighter tasks and will retain this for bigger jobs and hopefully get it fully working again one day.

I note that the motor control board (EDW550) in your photo is slightly different to mine, perhaps that was the Miele repair, tho could just be a different revision. Is there any chance you would have higher resolution pics of the remote control board still available? I'm suspecting that this is where the problem may be, so hopefully fixable or I may get lucky and pick up a 125-3 hose cheap enough to salvage the remote panel.

BTW - were you also on the Citroen XM list on Y! ?

many thanks
Dave

Hi Dave

Sounds like you've had some fun there! Glad you've bodged it working again, one day youll find a blown motor cleaner for £sod all to use for spares!

I've not had an XM for years now, so probably am not on that list. I have a Laguna 2 now, so I'm probably on a list somewhere, just not a good one!

Here's the board, track to the blue wire all but gone, just the ends of it remain
[attachimg=1]

yeah, wasn't fun thinking it was going to set the stair carpet alight just days before a rental inspection lol. For sure I'll keep a lookout for one or the hose. The german site does list the hose at around Eur100 but that's a lot to spend on a punt, tho I may ask them if they have any damaged ones, might be worth a shot as almost everything on this is surface mount and my eyes ain't up to that these days.

Same re the XM, think we'd exchanged messages there in the past. I had 3 of them but gave the v6 and all my spares away after the clutch broke in <2 years of being replaced. It went to a list member in Scotland and looks to be SORN now. Been running a v6 alfa since then :-)

Small world then! I probably did message you when I had it! Do miss that car, if it did more than 28mpg I'd have it now! Slumming it in a Laguna 2, although 58mpg is quite handy

I don't recognise the username though? Presume we would have spoken through Club-XM? Or the FCF?
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: aengus4h on September 05, 2018, 07:47:39 pm
haha know what you mean, tho my 3L XM did a lot better than the Alfa 2.5, tho the combo of 24v and auto doesn't help the Alfa much.

Back on topic tho, probing around with a multimeter and ESR meter, looks like the SMD's survived from what I can tell, tho in circuit testing isn't ideal, no plans to remove to test as I'm more likely to destroy them. Did find the PCB relay on the main EDW550 board contacts fused on, no longer switches so ordered up a replacement.  Funny exact same fault on a Miele washing machine a couple years back along with a PCB fuse when the stabiliser struts had gone weak. Very much doubt it'll be the only fault on the S556 but for £3 is worth a shot.

Post by: aengus4h on September 10, 2018, 01:40:21 pm
ok, relay replaced, but unfortunately no change to the remote function. Kinda expected that as the relay switches the power for the motor-head, which is now not running since the new relay doesn't have the contacts welded together. So, more investigation needed at some stage, will keep an eye out for a cheap s556 perhaps so I can make some comparative readings. Isn't urgent given it'll run at max power in the meantime :-)

I love it when people get down and dirty with the electronics! Can you not extend the wires and contacts with solder and new wire?
Title: Re: Miele Revolution 5000 S556 - Stripdown and Refurb
Post by: aengus4h on September 10, 2018, 09:57:21 pm
well I prefer to try repair than bin stuff if its possible. In terms of wires/contacts, all looks to be intact as do the components, only the track in the handle for the hose connection got burned off which is bridged with wire now.

Problem is when all hooked up the S556 behaves as it would if the hose wasn't connected at all, so full tilt when power turned on. The remote in the handle never lights up. Buzzed all the wiring end to end and its all ok so its not a broken wire between the remote panel and the main switch board. So it could be that the remote panel got fried but at £90+ for a hose its a gamble, the EDW550 maybe around £40 but again no way to prove either/both is where the fault really lies.

Case of trying to figure out the circuit schematics I guess now, tho removing that big connector block on the EDW550 isn't a simple desolder as you can't shift the solder on the blind side of the board, tried that earlier and it didn't budge :-( So trying to map bits of it out by eye/probe results. Am working with it disconnected tho, tis real risky to try probing around on either board with it live, as there's 240AC running along the cabling. The brown wire that runs into the handle goes into the remote board and out to the power connector so defo not one I want any contact with if its plugged in ;-)

Just got a Miele Revolution 500. The hose handle is quite smashed and had come away from the hose. Some fiddling and sellotape later and I’ve got it usable but really need a new hose. They are great machines but the obvious downfall is the hose!
