Title: Screaming Motor
Post by: Elgin on May 29, 2017, 12:22:44 am
So my new MTR299 is working perfectly
Only one problem - not the motor but something like a seal or something...
mostly its fine - sometimes there is a howl/scream if I open the presure relief valve by blocking the airflow? It happens on my DC14 if the motor airway isn't quite clicked in which gives me a seal fault impression - is it possibly becasue I pushed the motor in WITHOUT using any form of lubrication on the seal? just read a old post on here about a motor howl.
May just strip it, remove the mtoor - lubricate the fancase seal and rebuild it?
But it works damn well apart from that little incident - loads  - and I mean loads - not your average DC07 like x10 more suction, the normal non clutched brushroll growl and so on - I just really love non clutched for how good they are at picking up the carpet compared to non clutched. which of my Dysons do I prefer? DC01, DC04, DC07 or DC14 - it is the DC07 - unique yellow, turqoise, silver colour scheme - carpet eating performance - picks tonnes of dog hair up -
I think the DC07 Animal should of been non clutched because my origin works a lot better than both of my previous DC07 Animals - thats because of the carpet eating brushroll (Or as my nan calls it beater-bar - just like she always calls the hose a snake... Although my nan is amazing - and personally I do prefer the word snake instead of hose... cause it is a literall snake - it expands and slithers around and eats anything in its path...)

That will be ye olde famous Dyson howl. The bain of the budding rebuilder.  :chuckle:

Somebody hasn't got a DC07 workshop manual.  :whist11:

Got any glue or silicone sealer?

I can't believe i haven't had a howler / foghorn 07 for 10 years !

Until today - i dropped off a refurb for a lady, quick demo in the living room, turned off to explain filter servicing etc.

Started to explain the wand / hose - turned it on and then it started.... ffs.

She did laugh, brought it back and stripped the motor out refitted, partly reassembled and now ok - did reopen housing and add a little silicone sealant just to be sure - and will retest tomorrow.

Already have the book, but i knew what it was anyway... or i thought i did.

whipped motor out, checked big rubber motor housing thing, all looked fine - put it all back together - no howl 24 hours later but i did add a smear of silicone on the rubber housing nose.

Gave it a good floor test today but after 10 min it started howling again.

Bugger

Stripped motor out again, fitted a different motor bucket and side piece as well as the large rubber thing just for arguments sake ( i can't remember all the correct part names )

put it all back together and guess what ?  howling ! fog horn...

so....stripped again - motor - i noticed it looked slightly different to the more common dc07  240 motor
this one then i noticed the part number  YDK YV 511
fitted a new mtr299 instead and now ok.

Had a series of long floor tests and all is well. popped it's original cyclone assy on ( i use a test one for all machines instead of dirtying the machines washed ones ) and sounds partly blocked ! i know it's spotless inside and out...

However i remember jet washing this cyclone (a month ago) and when i removed top and pulled rod out there was a strange clump of something in there - emptied it out on the cut grass pile in garden and i have noticed a month later it's still there the same so not normal dust.
Gave it a poke and it feels muddy - and a blue / grey colour. Deep inside the cyclone unit still has it in there after looking with the scope so replaced the cyclone unit.

Another floor test - yep that sounds and feels better...
5 min later ....
clutch failed.... and what a noise...  ;D

I rebuild every clutch without fail, always have and always will, done hundreds over the years.

Had a great day today  :censored:

Looking on line for the original part number it seems it is an original DC04 motor.
More experienced members will know for sure, so looks like the machine was fitted with an incorrect motor in it's past service life, the motor bucket tabs did show signs of previous entry.

Anyway, sorted now... bit of a cursed machine  :))

Need to stop dealing with the 07 machines tbh, and focus on more ball machines  :biglaugh:
