Title: DC29 turbo head repair

Hi all!

I am working on DC29 turbo head. I have taken it to bits to learn what broke and found that drive is wonky.
Impeller is broken and got loose from drive shaft . It took some damage and both bearings got wobbly. I sourced larger one as 694Z (quite standard one), but smaller one needs to be taken out as there is no markings on visible side.

I am looking for source on such impeller for this turbo head.

I am also wondering if there is need to do anything with brush drive shaft? I have not tried to disassemble it more as brush mountings on shaft keep it tight.

Unfortunately, Dyson don't supply that impeller and nobody has made it after-market. The only way to repair that is to find another used head to cannibalise.

You could try a small torch to melt the halves back together.  The problem is that is unreliable and will likely break quickly.  epoxy would hold it together, but the weight would put it off balance, which will then shatter spectacularly.  It could be worth a try if you have the time, but don't expect results.

I've used qbond to glue a few of those fans on various turbo nozzles back together with no issues.

Not sure what the surrounding damage is though, but I'd glue it and try it first to be sure

Not had any comeback yet, one I did for someone the next village over, another for a girl who works downstairs so I would have heard about that by now, and a couple of other refurbs a fair few years ago!

It does rely on a clean break though because as you say, add any weight or glue it back on the squiff and you'll have issues! Looking at the larger image of your bearing housing it'll likely be fine!

Well that's a shame, but they sure will not endanger their sale of new turbo heads by offering few $ part.


I've used qbond to glue a few of those fans on various turbo nozzles back together with no issues.

I think that it will not work with one I have. It got out of shape and cracks propagated over whole body of impeller. Also as it got loose, the housing (glass fiber reinforced plastic) rubbed some material off, compromising strength and balance even more.

That would be nice critical failure experiment, though.

Yes, please let us know how it goes! I want to get some Turbopower rear wheels printed but don't know the strength of 3d printed parts, nor how to draw one up, nor anyone to print it... It's a thought I've had before anyway!

When I've had broken fans, they've let go of the shaft and just not spun, which sounds like a good thing. Yours must have clung on and caused internal carnage so not really repairable

It is a part I once looked into making, and I had it priced up in China, but it was a quite expensive mould as the design is so complex with the angles, etc. The numbers didn't stack up as demand would be comparatively small.

3D printing is a good possibility for this type of thing as prices get lower.

Araldite might be faster.
