Title: Whats the worst thing youve found in a vacuum cleaner?
Post by: beko1987 on May 15, 2014, 08:24:11 am
Picked a Miele off of freecycle earlier, had lived in a landrover nut's barn for 8 years.

Opened it up and discovered a little mouse. The missus picked it up  :snivel: but it jumped free and legged it. Took the chewed bag out and...

We had no idea what to do with them tbh although they were cute. After letting Eva have a good look we jumped in the car and went to our local wildlife hospital place thing...

Where they got triaged and fed. They will be hand reared until their old enough to be released into the wild.

Anyone top that? :king:

Not for me to say but she wasn't as skinny as it would have suggested. I Put the item in a brown envelope saying she might want it back. Her boyfriend who also came in insisted on opening the envelope. She was mortified. Then started to explain thy were worn when she did aerobics - boyfriend said she should not say anymore as making it worse  :))

A complete wasps nest inside the handle of a hoover floor polisher! (Same design as senior handle).
Poor darlings were dead tho, but preserved nonetheless.

If I were the manager there I'd be firing the idiot who keeps vacuuming that stuff up.  That's just a sign of laziness or stupidity.

Ugh.

My apologies if this has been covered before, but I thought it might be worth mentioning what was found in a DC07 I gave my daughter a few weeks ago, and which was returned to me this week with the comment "it doesn't suck, and blows fluff out".

A quick inspection revealed a u-bend completely clogged with sweet wrappers, cotton buds, a plastic dinosaur, a pencil, a child's paintbrush and most of the family Labrador's coat. So far, so bad. The machine also wouldn't stand up, due to the usual problem with the changeover valve mechanism. Easily fixed. The hose and wand were totally blocked virtually from top to bottom with more bits of Labrador, a sticky sweet, and numerous wrappers, etc. Principal cause of the blockage - a bulb of garlic. I was, for a while, speechless. Anybody found anything odder than this? Daughter just shrugged her shoulders.........

I just fixed up (And sold for $20, so it wasn't so bad for 2 hours of work while watching TV) a POS Bissell Easyvac.

It fired up but had no suction.   I open it up and found a 1/2 lb of cat hair matted in the hose, beater bar and in the motor housing.  I also got out a 1/4 cup of cat litter (mud and sand), 3 tissues and a rubber band.  The HEPA filter got so plugged that hair started going around it, getting into the motor and housing.  The motor looked like this:

with hair coming out of all the bits.  The seam of the housing was exactly the same.

All in all, 10/10 would fix again.

I've found a two pence piece up the wand which was stuck really fast. Had to ram it with a broom handle to dislodge it.
Seller had said it was temperamental. The coin was rotating in the pipe like a valve - open...shut.

My last DC04 strip was obvious what the problem was as the soleplate was flexing outwards under the pressure of hair wrapped round the brush roll. A real Cousin It!

We have had that one quite a few times.

I can update my original post. I was at my son's house at the weekend, and his girlfriend proudly told me that she had resolved a poor suction problem on their Dyson. My son (who uses shotguns professionally, and for sport), had picked up a live small-bore cartridge, which had lodged in the cleaner. The possible consequences don't bear thinking about.....
I shouldn't really be too surprised. I was replacing the belts on our DC07 on an almost weekly basis when he lived at home, always due to the ingestion of large objects.

So that still happens then. January was always a profitable month for that very reason.

Many years ago, about 25 to 30, I got a call from a shop on an RAF base to say that a pet gerbil had somehow got into their suction cleaner and was trapped in the hose. Can't remember all the details as it was a long time ago, but I did finally manage to get it out unharmed.

I had 2 Vorwerks to fix recently, an old dear that Amy knows. Bit of soldering on a broken wire and an unclog later, they work fine. When she collected them, she bought an 'old hoover' round she found in her loft.

It was a fabulous Goblin Solo!

[attachimg=1]

Utterly filthy, and with a broken cable. But what did I find in the bag compartment?

[attachimg=2]

3 dry mice!

Tipped those out, new cable, drop of oil on the motor, good clean of the seals, wipe down of the plastics and a new post filter made from a cut up numatic hepaflo bag and job done, worked perfectly!

I hope you never have a cat
Ours bought in a live rat and let it go in our bedroom. Took over an hour to catch it and let it go.

We had a rat infestation in our old flat when the shop downstairs had the drains done. They let us off the last months rent and refunded the deposit in full when we moved out (the lady who ran the shop owned the flat), my apocolyptic anger may have helped there!

Don't like rats, mice are OK. I want to get Eva a hamster when she's a touch older

There is no point getting a kid a hamster, its always asleep. Its a nocturnal animal. A couple of rats however make  great pet's, they like human company, they are very friendly and affectionate and like to play, kids love them.

I've pulled a mutilated rat out of a sanitaire, bloody bandages and all sorts of good stuff, my personal favorite is when a households cats/dogs/etc select the vacuum as a urinal. Those sticky, yellow machines are probably the grossest things I've ever smelled in my entire life. Right up there with old dog Kirby outer cloth bags. Nasty.

Just refurb'ed a DC26, and it was full of mud, an insane amount of polyester stuffing (the type inside stuffed animals/pet toys) and the turbine head clogged with damp Wal-mart receipts pressed into a solid mass. I'm new here (Hi!) and might do a little writeup on the process.

Way way back when, in junior high, I worked on a project that required a high-wattage fan motor, and someone's parents' friend donated to us an old Hoover that had been run without a bag in place. It was inexplicably filled with the obliterated remains of a head of garlic...

Mildly related, but I'm always astounded at how many eBay listings I see that are proud to include a half-full bag already fitted, as if old carpet dust was a great bonus.
