We went to Newquay in September, and I was browsing the usual sites from our location + 10 miles, and found a Turbopower on preloved. Quick grovel later and we head out on Sunday afternoon to Redruth
£10 later, and I was the proud* owner of a battered U2332!

I grabbed the Turbopower box and got a nice NOS bearing

Excited, I plugged her in, flicked the switch and...nothing! Tore it apart again and checked all the wiring against the diagrams in the 1987 service manual, still nothing. I put it together again and put it in the corner of the room whilst I refurbished a DC14 for a customer.
Earlier, I got it out and had the motor back out. Turns out I;d bent one of the carbon holders slightly, meaning it wouldnt touch the armature. (hence me adding the 'check your bushes above) Quick bend back, and she purred into life!

Hello, I'm new here but found your article very interesting.
I have exactly the same Hoover, it has been in weekly service since bought in 1986 as a wedding present. All original but looking a bit battered obviously! Last week it went 'single speed' for some reason, it doesn't matter whether the switch is on '1' or '2', it doesn't change the motor speed.
I have had the top off and there are only live and neutral wires connected to the motor, so I assume the switch in the handle must be faulty? Any ideas? If it is an easy fix I'll have a go, otherwise it might be time to retire the old girl!
I'll post if I end up buying a new vac - you are welcome to any bits for spares if interested.

Excellent to hear that one is still in daily service! I wouldn't expect anything less though from an old Hoover!
The switch will be at fault, but I'm not 100% sure. I've asked the question to a few people who might know, will report back with what they say! I think you can check by re-wiring the switch to 'the other way round' so the second speed works only, to check that the switch is at fault. Don't move wires until someone's confirmed the correct method to me though!
Has it switched to low or hi speed? You are correct, the switch does the work, the motor just takes the speed its told to!

I have a possible answer already from some elder collectors (I wasn't born until 1987!)
Within the handle wiring (there's a picture of it at the top of this thread) there is a Diode, which controls the voltage change from low to hi. Apparently this can go causing only one speed. Short of a multimeter I'm not sure how to test this, you could wire the mains cable straight to the motor to check it runs at full speed, but obviously would need to feel confident doing this.
I *think* I have a TP1 Handle with the wiring loom fitted, I could have a look and if so would be happy to post it to you, you would have to fit it though as per the pictures above!

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate your help. I had a look this evening at the switch, I don't have a multimeter, just a basic mains tester but I think the switch is delivering full power both on setting 1 and setting 2, so as I hardly ever need to use low speed I can live with it. But thanks for the kind offer of the replacement handle.
It's always good to have an excuse to strip the machine down and clean it up and oil the activator bearings anyway, it is running almost like new again! For some reason this old Hoover with its 410 watt motor seems a lot more powerful than the 1600 watt Panasonic which I inherited from my mother, that thing has been consigned to the garage for car cleaning duty!

From what I've been told the diode has gone. It halves the voltage when speed 1 is selected, making the two speeds.
If you can live with only the higher speed, then it won't harm it. You could find a replacement diode and solder it in, but I've never stripped the sheathing off to have a look so have no idea what kind it is!
They work better than 1600w screamers because they are well designed. Dirty fan cleaners always groom and work on carpets better than clean fan ones Plus, it will Beat, as it Sweeps as it Cleans, its one of the last to have that!

Sorry to pick your brains again but if I do replace the Hoover, what's best to go for? (If cost was no option). I think I understand about dirty fans and clean fans, dirty fans suck the muck through the fan blades and blow it into the bag, while clean ones have the filters, bags etc before the fan, thus reducing suction, is that right?
So are Dysons really the best? I've always thought them a bit heavy and overpriced (apologies if you are a Dyson fan!) but people who have Dysons seem pretty happy with them. After nearly 30 years with the Hoover things have moved on a bit and there is a lot of choice out there.

I'm not a dyson fan, especially not the latest ones, I prefer the older vacuums. If you want bagless, then a nice refurbished dc07/14 would be a good buy, for bagged try a Miele S7, or a Sebo X4. Panasonic might still do a good vacuum, John Lewis do their John numatic vacuum with a turbobrush.
Avoid modern Hoovers I'm afraid to say, and Vax. I've done a thread or two about them, and have had a few and their the most badly designed pieces of tosh about. No design thinking, no care for longevity etc.
Or you could 'upgrade' to a turbo power 2 or early bagged Pure power (avoid the bagless and current ones!)

Hi i have a hoover identical but the handle release will only lock upright when you push the pedal up with your foot and i cant get it into the flat low furniture position. I wonder if it is to do with the repacement wheels that are not genuine nor of the original style. Also the bag release catch is stiff to push down too.

Mmm, could be a few things:
Do you have the spring underneath the release pedal which pushes it back up to lock it in position?
Is your trunnion broken? (the bit where the white latch peice slots onto)
Is the white latching peice broken?
Is the pedal pivot point gummed up with dirt? Does it work any better after a cleanout and a drop of grease on the moving parts?
I doubt the wheels would cause the issue, unless different axles were used, you'll have to see if it fouls anywhere.
RE bag door latch, again, take it apart, clean it up and put it back together. Nip the screw up fully, then back off half a turn and see what its like!

The damage is terminal. The chassis has broken but cant complain as headlight switch brush all works and the cable is fine. Also it came with 2 genuine bags. Not bad for a tenner. It dates from March 87

Sounds like the chassis has gone, very common on all turbopowers. It's due to worn rear wheels that then rub on the chassis and eventually slice it through just above the pedal pivot point so the pedal then twists so doesn't lock unless you give it a little twist.

I've also seen them snap under the trunnion, due to the pivots not pivoting nicely, or getting jammed and people forcing it. Broke a (admittidly scrappy) U1220 due to that last year.
I have a very rare turboboost which has a smashed chassis. Keep meaning to get the glue and fibreglass out to have a go at repairing it, but haven't got round to it yet! It snapped where the white reclining ring slides over the chassis arm, the whole things crunched off. May not be a pretty repair but as long as its useable, I'm happy with that!

Pretty doesn't matter as long as you save it from the scrap pile. Have you ever tried Milliput ? Brilliant for smaller repairs & can be milled & drilled once hard. Lidl do a similar sort of thing from time to time & that's not bad either.

I have the turboboost, which is pretty rare, and also a more common U2904 with the same issue. Want to have a trial run on the more common machine first just to make sure! Must get my arse in gear with it tbh.

Depending on where exactly the break is i've used a hot soldering iron with a spreading tip on to melt and draw plastic over the crack before bonding over with anything. BUT the amount of stress on the rear of a turbo chassis when the machine is picked up will crack a repair again eventually.

I thought of that, then thought exactly what you have!
Was planning on glueing it all back together, then second skinning it internally with fibreglass. Never having used fibreglass before though, I'm not sure if it will just sit ontop of the plastic and not be much help at all, or will do a really good job.
If trunnions were more plentiful, I have been tempted to cut a whole section out of one, cut the bad section out of mine then glue/fix/epoxy/magic the two together, but then there would be one massive weak point on the whole thing, rather than several weak spots that could be stitched together.

1 of my mates is an ex REME mechanic & swears by Milliput, apparently it was part of their standard emergency kit. Have to be fair it's got me out of a few scrapes, not cheap but well worth the money.
You could try stitching it with stiff wire under the patch to strengthen it, I've done that in the past with good results both on plastic cases and pcb's. But if it's an area on show then it's not so good.
To get the fibreglass to adhere better, you need to rough up the plastic first. Don't use super glue to stick it together, it's got no gap filling properties. Use something like Gorrila glue or Araldite.

I've found milliput on ebay, seems fairly reasonable. Does it work/feel/look like an epoxy type product? Does it 'melt into' the plastic it's sticking together or just sit strongly on top? Would I be able to use thin beads of it spidering off the repair to act as strengthening braces? Or would some stiffish (thinking house socket type cable stripepd out of the shething) wire heated up and pressed into the surrounding area be any good at stiffening it up?
I did stick one of them together with qbond which did work, and I was going to leave it at that and just cover it in fibreglass, but then I forgot, leant on it and heard a crunch. It didnt fully fail, but I imagine it's half broken again!

Milliput basically sets like steel & sticks quite well to most things, if you go to somewhere like Poundstretcher you can usually get a hank of uncoated fence wire for about 99p & that works well.

If you think that's bad you should try the one shot stuff for fixing de-laminated caravan floor's :o my hands were green for over a week, slowly pealing the stuff off and having green nails for 2 months was not fun :biglaugh:

Despite the chassis being broken the lean is reducing with use and the pedal is locking upright without persuasion. But it is the wheels. They are to high and stopping the pedal going down properly which prevents it going into the flat position. That and the axles are just nuts and bolts.

If the axles are nuts and bolts that'll be why the handle won't go all the way down. Turbopower rear axles have a very thin head to fit into the slot in the chassis so they are flat, obviously circlips and washers on the wheel side. The same problem occurs when the wheel centres are badly worn and the axle moves in and jams the trunion / bag housing.
